Yo Kiwi, we depart Oz Sept 1 and apparently will be in Taupo on the 13th. Can you turn the thermostat up, stop the rain, bring down the price of fuel & beer, and get some fresh fish happening?

Actually, you often refer to a pretty decent surf & turf at your local. I'm sure they have an open fire in there - maybe we'll just eat there....AFTER we have a few beers, I survey your vast collection of cars, we knock back a pizza and make the valves bounce in the Dodge.

That'll be easy - I don't like the way she's looking at me...Okay - tofu it is.

Well, the day is almost here. Tomorrow morning we're off to the airport and will arrive Christchurch about midnight. I have packed almost every piece of clothing I possess in the faint hope of retaining at least some body warmth. Half of my suitcase is filled with Pontiac parts, so once I unload them I'll have lots of room for souvenirs. Yeah, I know. I can't think of anything either.

I will get the boss to knit you a wooly jumper so you can make it home without getting hypothermia Mate

ffs ! Just pack your drinking shoes ! Hahaha

My regular 'drinking shoes' are a pair of thongs (flip flops for our international viewers) which I will NOT be bringing because it's gonna be cold. Never mind - I don't care what I'm wearing as long as I'm warm and the beer is cold.

Tell the Boss to not bother with a jumper as I'll never get to wear it, which is a pity coz a short bald man with 3 day's growth looks quite fetching in a quality jumper - think Sean Connery but about a foot shorter!

Ringo, you can be assured that I'll be leaving my 'thongs,' mankinis and sequins behind for this trip. There's nothing more uncontrollable than an excited Kiwi.

Men don't look good in thongs.....period. It's way wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.

So now that Fitzy and Kiwi are together in the southern hemisphere. I expected the "down under" version of "hold ma' beer, watch this" type of shenanigan's to begin.

Boys, just remember, we expect lots of photos - especially if there is stupid involved! Exceptional stupid demands photos! Cheers mates!

So do we get a new thread? The Tales of Fitzy and Kiwi? The Misadventures of Fitzy and Kiwi? The List of Pubs Frequented by Fitzy and Kiwi in 24 Hours?

Awww you guys !
fitzy down the South Island first … wait till he does the South Island beer crawl first … then jumps on the ferry to get on the north island … that ship is a wild ride if the weathers crap ! Then gets into windy Wellington !!! Good luck if he and his boss aren’t sea sick by then !

Here I am in Christchurch. It's warmer here than at my place! I've got every warm piece of clothing I own with me but am wandering around in a shirt and a hoodie with a broken front zip! We're (I'm) about to chug down a pint or two of Guinness in a minute before sampling some good ol' Irish pub tucker. For the record, we're actually flying into Wellington, so will be airsick rather than seasick. I managed to smuggle all my excess Pontiac parts into the country - the drug dog had a sniff and didn't know what to make of the scent, so because he dawdled his handler urged him on. Take THAT New Zealand government!

Rather than hijack Kiwi's thread (once again) I will start a new one once I find something interesting to photograph. Hey, it's Day One - I'll get there.

My sta bill arrived ! And I want you to tell me all about how to use it justA !

Now as you know I have a few petrol fuelled engines ,what is the best way to use the sta bil ?
and I have small engines that sit for long periods too ! My Stihl shop told me to justA dump the fuel out of my trimmer and saw so it doesn’t glaze up the carb … can I avoid this by using the sta bil ?

Gas is way to expensive now to just tip out !

And , does this work as a additive to replace lead gas ?

  • Popular Post

No, it's not a substitute for lead in fuel, unfortunately.   The TEL (tetraethyl lead) in gasoline, in addition to raising octane, worked by providing a soft lead "cushioning effect" on the exhaust valve seats so that the valves didn't hammer the seats into the heads when they closed.   In reality, that was only a risk under really heavy engine loads such as pulling a trailer up a long hill, when the engine was working hard and putting a lot of extra heat into the exhaust valves and seats.   It's pretty safe to run unleaded fuel in engines without hardened seats, as long as it's not subjected to those kinds of loads.

Letting any engine sit for an extended period of time with fuel in it runs the risk of having the fuel 'gum up' things - especially if the fuel has any alcohol in it which makes it hydrophilic (it loves to absorb moisture).  StaBil helps to alleviate that some.  For engines that I really need to depend on, like my backup generator we use to power the critical things around the house (such as our water well pump), whenever I'm ready to shut it down I ALWAYS turn off the fuel valve and let it run until it stops from lack of fuel.   Having StaBil-ized fuel sit in the tank after that isn't a problem, but letting it sit in all the tiny passages in the carb and other parts of the system would eventually be.   Because of this practice I follow, the generator ALWAYS starts immediately on the first pull, no matter how long it has been sitting, which is quite nice when I'm having to hook it up and switch over to generator power in the middle of the night when it's freezing/rainy outside and I'm still 9/10's asleep.

I always keep the tank on the generator full of treated fuel, and also keep at least 15 gallons of treated fuel in metal "jerry cans" at the ready.   Thank goodness I had all that already in-place during the "snowpocalypse" we had recently in here in Texas.    We ran our house systems on that generator for a solid week and were never without heat or water, didn't lose any food from spoilage, etc..   I've since upgraded to a larger, higher capacity generator but still a 'portable' unit that runs on either gasoline or propane.    The one that got us through that winter storm worked to keep us going, but just barely - my wife managed to pop the breaker on it one morning just by using the toaster when the well pump happened to be running.  :D I'd be interested in a 'whole house' backup with an automated transfer switch, but fuel is a problem I haven't solved yet.   We're on propane out here in the boonies with no natural gas utility available.   Even a large, dedicated 500 gallon propane tank can only power one of the big units for about 2 days, so if we have another weather event like that one and couldn't get resupplied on propane every couple of days, we'd be out of luck.   Diesel powered whole-house generators are super expensive, plus I'd have to deal with preventing the fuel from gelling up in cold temps in addition to the problem of keeping enough on-hand to carry us through for an extended time.

So for the time being, having a big gasoline-powered backup generator I think is the best option for us.   I do have a 4-wheel drive pickup, and because I grew up in the northern Texas Panhandle where we got actual winters, driving in snowy, icy conditions isn't a problem for me.  As long as there's a gas station open anywhere in the area I'll be able to get out and get more fuel, if needed.

My small engines, tractor, boat, leaf blower, generators, ect.  I run them til empty.  this gets as much from the carb as poss. Todays gas absorbs moisture and will rust anything metal and will break down rubber products, like gas lines, needle valve seats.  Gauge the last use, even if you have to add a LIL more to finish what your doing.  Cars, boat,  Mix appropriate amount as instructed on bottle in a 1 gallon can.  Shake/mix then dump er in the tank.  This really helps mix with the fuel in tank.  Or add to tank and drive the car a bit to mix before storage. Perfect excuse for doughnuts in a parking lot!!! :driving: Don't forget to go in opposite direction as well....  If you need to add in a small engine, run that a bit as well to make sure its mixed and protecting the carb as well, keep as close to full as ya can.  This helps keep condensation from forming in the tank, during Wild swings in outside temp. Or high humidity.  Stabil is good for 2 years (factory recommendation) but 3yrs is not unheard of.  Like my snowmobiles.

What I use the most from Gold Eagle products is the 104 Octane Boost N system cleaner.  Will jump your 87 grade fuel to 89, clean your system and injectors.  Trips North on expressway, noticeable improvement in gas mileage.
