So a couple months ago we were talking about Stabil fuel additive. I justa had an experience I wanted to share with yall. I've been really bust the last couple of months with getting everything thing ready for our wedding vow renewal, getting the Delta running to sell and a million other things. In that time iv kinda been neglecting my poncho. So, the Delta got stable put in her about a month and a half ago while working on it, the Harley about 2 weeks ago, the Pontiac yesterday. I added the Stabil to the gas can mixed it up and poured it in. Flipped the kill switch, turned on the power to the car and watched for the fuel pump to fill the glass fuel filter. Once filled I noticed fuel dumping out of the carb. After hitting the kill switch and drying the carb I looked it over, nothing stood out. Had my son hit the switch and I see fuel bubbling out of what I was guessing to be vents or a bypass on each side of the carb next to the metering rods. When I opened the butterfly there is a full stream of fuel squirting. My first thought was too much fuel pressure or metering rod issue. Since this is a brand new Edelbrock AVS2 I decided to call tech support before taking it apart. He agreed it was fuel pressure or metering rods stuck open. I asked what would cause that and he said fuel. He then asked if I had any kind of fuel additive in my fuel, something like Stabil. I told him that's what I was doing was winterizing the car today. He had me tap the back, front, and sides of the carb near the rods with a screwdriver. I put the power to the car and no leaks. I asked him if I needed to pull the rods and clean them. He said no, not if your using Stabil you don't, Stabile will clean them up, justa let the car run for 5 or 10 min and it'll be good. Then informed me that Edelbrock recommends Stabil brand fuel treatment in all their products. I justa found this interesting and thought I would share it with ya.

That is interesting mate, my first thought was a stuck float needle and when you taped the carb you dislodged it and it shut off.

i have had this happen with hollys and their rubber tipped float needles

That also reminds me to get my butt into gear and get the Stabil into the cars that are not being used.

Pretty much the same thing that happened to the Sunbird when I tried to fire it.  But that was AFTER draining out 5yr old fuel from the tank.  It did have Stabil, but factory recommends storage for 2yrs or so.  Led to the next problem that was fuel pressure with the new gas in it.  Not getting more than 1LB of fuel pressure, but the carb is still puking as well.  Now need to drop the tank, replace pump, check all rubber lines and blow out the hard lines and rebuild the carb.:stars:

Interesting story Wrongway. Thanks for sharing. As I said before, I stored Black Beauty (unintentionally at the time) for 10 years with Stabil Storage in the tank. The fact that she ran and the gas didn't turn to varnish in that time is a small minor miracle. Now I don't recommend storing a car for ten years with or without Stabil but I think it help me when I finally restarted her. I ran the tank nearly completely empty too before I put any new gas in it as well.

So, Wrongway - I must be missing something. Was the old fuel causing carb internals to stick? Does Sta-bil prevent that from happening? It's a brand new carb, so why were things going wrong? You obviously have an electric fuel pump. Surely they're designed not to exceed a certain pressure - say, enough to unseat the float valve or something. Everyone else who read what you wrote probably gets it, but I'm a bit slow!

When I asked the Edelbrock tech what would cause that he said the quality of the fuel now a days. My reply was "really, it's only been sitting 3-4 months at most". He said that with today's fuel 2-3 months is all it takes to start gumming things up and eating away at the rubbers inside. Sorry I can't give you a better answer Fitzy, maybe one of the other guys can explain it to both of us

My answer to that would be “really” to chad !

no way is fuel doing that in 2 months 20 moths yeah !

Yup I agree but tapping on it freed them up and I started her up today with no issues. So I don't know bro.

All I've found out about modern fuel is that ethanol (alcohol) evaporates. This is why your float bowls are empty if you leave the car sitting for a coupla weeks. I use a syringe (no needle, that's for afterwards...just kidding) and get fuel into both float bowls that way. It avoids endlessly cranking the engine to fill the bowls. The residue and gum are also obvious problems, but fuel must be stable for more than a coupla months, surely. Anyway, importantly Wrongway's issue seems to be sorted. Tap the carb with a screwdriver handle. Welcome to the 21st century. Hey George Jetson - having trouble with your anti gravity nuclear powered flying machine? Grab a screwdriver and tap the plutonium bowl. There you go! Sorted.

Justa remember Fitzy, a Prius has no carby to tap on!

That's right. In a Prius you'll be travelling to your destination (possibly Hooters) instead of stuck under the hood in the rain banging on the carb, grunting & sweating and moaning about what a piece of crap this is!

Hmmm some one needs to tell Fitzy why we are car people ! Hahaha

we love grunting …. Sweating …. and most of all moaning !

Yup, it's an argument he justa can't win.

And you always seem to get better stories while, "stuck under the hood in the rain banging on the carb, grunting & sweating and moaning about what a piece of crap this is!" then you do at a Hooters.

Its sunday afternoon here in nz , i took the boss for a ride in the 64, yes i have been negleting  her ... car that is

And i keep feeling like i am pushing her to move,( once again the car not the boss)! which makes me think accelerator pump. again

And . when i get back from a drive the idle is up, i can open the hood and twig the throttle and she seatles down.

now i have already checked all the rod connections to the carb and i think the main throttle body is worn, and the shaft is binding.

Ok, so my idea is new avs2. why?

you can rebuild a carb at home from a 58 year old car BUT there are parts that do not come in the kit.

Fitzy is on the right track sending his one to a carb shop ... but i will go next level and buy a brand new one... watch this space.

Thats if i can buy a 650 cfm edlebrock with electric chock in nz! tonight.... 7 days before xmas... i dont think i will find one!!

haha!

Merry christmas all our Forever pontaic family !

Wanted to buy 1 x #1906 edelbrock :dancingpontiac:

I think you're doing the right thing by going with a new carb. I haven't heard anything from the shop I sent mine to. The carb is either sitting on the post office floor in the corner covered in dust, it's been strapped to a satellite and is circling the earth, or the guys at the shop are frantically looking up How To Rebuild A Carter.

Mind you, it takes a lot of miles to wear a carb and your 64 doesn't look like a high mileage vehicle - the previous owner simply had trouble avoiding larger inert objects.

I was going to try my old pump plunger in it but after yesterday  taking it for a drive , I think it best not to muck with it any more

I just called proparts and my mate there is going to find me a 650 cfm edelbrock

I remember when I visited the folks at Gold Eagle, HQ for Stabil/HEET/303 car care products, etc, in Chicago several years ago they said that today's modern gas can start to go bad within two weeks of being pumped into your car. That's why it is so important to fuel stabilizer in gas and machines that will be sitting for long periods of time without running. Ethanol doesn't help the situation either.

Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away, there was a show on telly called I Love Lucy. In one memorable episode, there was a car dealer who's yard was called "Honest Charlie's Cheerful Chariots," or something. When I see your collection of clapped out machinery in that pic, it was the first thing that came into my head...apart from the CO2 bubbles from my current beer. That 57 is such a stylish old beast. Reminds me of the old metal monsters that prowl the streets of Havana. I was always careful to doublecheck the traffic before attempting to cross the road in Cuba - just in case the ancient drum brakes on those old cars weren't quite up to scratch.
