Got the cam installed and i decided to get a new roller timing gear set also, i cranked the engine over and verified that the lifters rotate and that was all good, it's almost back together and hopefully I'll have time to start it up this weekend.

When i started it the first time the ps pump didn't work so i pulled it apart and i think the valve under the outlet is missing, have another old pump and it has the valve but that one won't fit in the Pontiac pump, the hole is not as deep and has som kind of fitting screwed in to the bottom so I'm not sure what is supposed to be in the Pontiac pump.

But i have a plan i will replace the belt driven pump with a electric one that will also help with the belt wrap on the alternator which is pretty bad on the stock setup on this car.

A friend of mine has installed a handful of these pumps and it works great, went to pick your part and removed one from a Volvo S40 . the plan is to install it behind the battery under the fender we will see how that works out later on.

This is what the pump looks like.

now thats a cool idea as the electric motor will provide a constant pressure unlike a belt drive one.. as we all know at idle, belt drive will be not as flash !

i look forward to pics of how your hook it up

Yeah i don't know why i didn't replace the plugs before, the ones in the block was brass i believe and looked pretty fresh so i didn't bader and the heads i bought later from Frank's Pontiac, they had been bead blasted and magnafluxed so they looked pretty but apparently the inside of those plugs did not.

I had one leak right of before i even started it the first time and had to replace it so it was one of those things you know it's the right thing to replace them all even though you don't want to but from experience you know that it is going to come back and bite you later, and to replace them with all the sheet metal on it is going to be alot harder.

Merry Christmas to you and everyone else here also. We are having a little different Christmas this year, half of the family is in Europe and taking care of the aftermath from a father-in-law that passed so just me and my son doing a "light" version.

Got it running yesterday,so far so good.

With the new fan clutch it was staying right at 180-190 and it was right around 80 in the sun on the driveway, when that thing comes on it is pulling a lot of air.

Removed the p/s pump and found a shorter belt now the wrap around the alternator is ok but the belt was still slipping on the water pump pulley when the fan came on, i think the belt is to wide and sit too high in the grove, i have another one coming, hopefully it works better.

Almost time to start working on the front sheet metal , I'm not painting the car at this time but should probably try to clean up the inside of the fenders and hood, got some surface rust and could need a coat of chassis paint, my biggest problem is that my compressor died and I need to get a new pump, probably at the beginning of next year.

Well done andy

are you happy with how it’s running ?

Yes it sounds pretty good, ran it again today about a half an hour but since i don't have any sheet metal on in the front i can't drive it so fingers crossed,  no on to the fenders and other stuff in the front.

That’s a major step forward andy

Got a new pump for the compressor because they don't have any spare parts for my old one so back in business but it has been raining pretty bad for the last couple of days and since i have to be out on the driveway I'll have to wait,is supposed to be better this weekend.

I'll take the rain over what they have had in the Midwest and on the east coast anytime.

I'll have to figure out what and how much to do with the outside of the car, it's not getting painted for now but maybe I can clean it up and make it look a little bit better, I'm no body guy so any Ideas?

He was always called Sunny because he's so bright!   Don't have the backstory on the Fitzy nickname.

Come on guys - Fester doesn't look anything like me...except for the lack of hair, those mad eyes, the dark circles under the eyes and lack of dress sense. All right, well he's a bit like me.

To answer JustA's question re my nickname, my surname starts with Fitz. Inevitably, wherever I work there's always another Peter somewhere, so it's just easier to go with Fitzy - an all purpose moniker.

Wire brushed the inside of the fenders and at least got them primered.

Found this oil based primer, i was surprised that you could still buy it with all the regulations.  Fired the engine up a few times over the weekend and it sounds pretty good, got the narrower belt installed an it definitely works better,

Got a little bit of time today, first coat of black on the fenders.

You can really see the crappy body work on the inside when they got painted  but we we will have to deal with that another day.

I'm hearing you, Andy. The paint was so bad on my GP that one day I experimented and sanded it thru various grades of wet & dry and the result was nothing less than amazing. It still wears it's newly refurbished original paint to this day. Admittedly, it needs a paint job and that will happen later this year, but it's much much better than it was.

That's kinda where I'm at, i got this Rust-Oleum white that a painter friend of mine is going to help me tweak so it gets closer to my white so i can use it for touch up, we'll see how that goes since I'm not much of a painter/ body guy 😄
