Those buckles look far more modern than mine. My car came with front retracting seat belts with a chrome Fisher adorned buckle. It's funny because the retractor works the opposite to a modern retractor. You sit on the seat, pull out the retracted belt, lock it in, then adjust the fixed end. The retractor mechanism serves only to neaten the interior: in any sort of panic stop, I'd imagine the driver's head and torso impacting any number of interior bits and pieces. Unlike a modern retractor, mine retract as well as they did back in 65. Try THAT with a 5 year old car.

hello mate !!! where ya been ????

yes very interesting point you make.... when i first got the 64 i spent many a hour working out what happened to the driver with such a big impact in that passenger side frame rail.

.... i am guessing that they WHERE  wearing the lap belt other wise i would have expected a head print in the window screen!!!

what i did get was a ....... and i am guessing here, a body of the driver tucked in the steering wheel with their knuckle's in the speedo.. with evidence being a smashed speedo screen  and my steering wheel that clearly had been cut in two by what to me looks like one mother f-cking pair of bolt cutter

my guess was the jaws of life where used to extract the driver

KIwi - what is the NZ regulation regarding seat belts? Do they need to be re-certified or replaced after a certain period of time?

There are companies that remake the old style belts with the Fisher logo here in the US. Not the cheapest thing but they are new belts/fabric in the OEM style and colors. Yours appear to be the basic black.

there is a whole lot of rules around their condition and little things like a fray on the edge would be a fail, they also need to have all their standards visible ( the white tag)

when i talk to the belt guy yesterday, he said he can remake my ones provided the standards tag was readable so a new tag could be printed and attached to the new belts.

and basically if you came with belts from the factory, they have to have them.... good example is 54 chevs had no belts, so if vinning a 54 now, legally you dont need to put them in, which this day and age is justA Dumb, you want that safety.

my belts justA look cool with that fisher coach on them, so i will get them repaired 👍

I suspected something was up based on what you said. Thanks for the explanation.

Like I said, exact reproductions can be had if that were necessary.

I agree with you. Driving any vehicle without seat belts is dumb! :ORLYOwl:

guys i need some advise here, i am trying to find the correct seal kit to fix this front of the trans leak i have, i am not sure what is leaking and i want to be armed with the correct seals BEFORE i pull the trans.

my id tag says pbs 64  114635 which i think is called a dual coupling super hydromatic, but is this also called a jetaway ???

i had a look on Dels advise at the fatsco web site but they only show full rebuild kits or a separate front seal, what i really need is a whole seal kit like this one

https://www.classictransmissionsolutions.com/jetaway-gasket-seal-kit-1956-1964-transmission-free-us-ship/

BUT is this the correct one for my trans ???

Think this is the info that you're seeking...The only Auto transmissions I see listed in any of the Manuals are the Roto Hydra-Matic..And the Super Hydra-Matic..There is No mention of the Jet Away Trans...in either the 1963 chassis manual or the 1964 chassis manual...Which is Supplement for the 63 manual..According to the info on the ID tag on your Transmission you  have the Super hydramatic...Hope this helps...

Kiwi..

Have been doing some more research...on the Jetaway transmission on a couple of different sites...According to One site...Called Transmission Charlie..

https//www.charlietranny.com

The Superhydra-Matic...Is also referred to as the Jetaway 315...

After looking at the 1964 supplement again I noticed this..

So I'm thinking  the Supr hydra matic and the jetaway 315 may be one in  same...But not 100% sure...16391965751144735818715398490178.jpg

two lane, well done!! i never saw that !!!

the worst thing that could happen mate, is i pull the trans, open up the end and the bloody seals are different !!! and the car would have to be put back together and taken off the hoist!

my other thought, is maybe its over full ??? could it be pushing fluid out from some where in there? my level says its right,,, but i have to been reading and it should be checked after at least 10 minutes of highway driving and then left to sit for at least 5 mins !!

as the fluid will go down... not sure about this as i have never had one of these older trans !! i am turbo guy.. 350, 400 or glide!!

i am also thinking that if it is over full it would push it out to a point then stop,,,, now i have road tested it a few times and its still leaking,,,, not much but it is still doing it

funny that you say about going out in the firebird, we live on a stretch of road called the Napier taupo road... state highway 5 that gets closed for lots of reasons on a regular basis.... and when it does... thats means no cops!!! guess what i do:driving:as we get to pass through the barriers to get home !!!

best i have done is 185 and that was in the hellcat! and i was a ball of mush after that!!!

camaro will only get to 120 and yet again ... yip ball of mush!! shaking ... etc...

maybe i could try my mk1 cortina now its tuned:cheers::rofl: it is made out of British steel, i am pretty sure my mtd ride on has more steel in it than the cortina!!! but ha !! 162 hp at the rear wheels on the dyno.... its going to be a wild ride in a car that weighs about 750kgs

I am not sure who had the dumb idea of making hood linners out of cardboard

but clearly they needed their arse kicked !!  Holden has used them in these 90is cars I am fixing and they are pure crap!!

My upostery mate warned me they are super fragile and there is no after market replacements !!  Go figure 😡

here i have sprayed water over the card to soften it and get it back to the space it used to be, loaded with some kiwi bits and pieces

a flat bit of board, a 8 lugger rim and 2 ford escort support wheels!! hahha

I once bought a brand new Subaru Impreza wagonoid thing. One day it rained so hard that some water got into the car (parked in a gutter and it overflowed) so the next day when the sun came out I set about dismantling as much of the car as I had to in order to get the carpet out to dry. As I pulled out plastic panels and bits of cardboard, all of a sudden I had reached sheetmetal. In other words, what constitites the vast majority of a modern car's interior is thin plastic, cardboard & vinyl. That was when I wondered what my $25k had actually bought. In direct contrast, stripping the GP involved vast quantities of formed metal, chrome, stainless steel, thick Naugahyde and all manner of thick insulation. The seats were sprung instead of formed foam on plastic and it all reeked of quality. You won't see that again unless you buy a Bentley.

Personally I never liked under bonnet insulation. If it was tatty I removed it and cleaned the sheetmetal that was under it.

yip mine looks like that Del !, i have made contact with gene Berck who built your trans, and explained what mine is doing and he straight up told me to forget it, i need special tools to do the seals and there is tricks to doing it too. he said what my local trans guy said and that was pull it and stick a turbo 400 in there, which i can as my 64 block does have the holes for the block mounting starter. i did think of justA having a go at the seal myself, but Gene is the master of these trans and told me all about his gm days working in 5 different departments along with his history with building race trans and engines.

so it looks like i am changing the trans out !! justA have to find a pontiac one !!!
