Look at you with your sunshine, moderate temperature and friends. I'm about to grow webbing between my toes so I can get through the water faster.

GP is staying put this week. Too wet to go out.

Picked up some 400 heads yesterday

frosty would you know where to look to see what year they are ?
They  have 1.9 and1.6 valves  and came off a 68 gp

but that means nothing … the engine could have been swapped out or anything …

The look to have 46 cast into the center exhausts and j348 and j338

Happy Birthday mate, many more!

Kiwi - 46 cast heads were used on several engines. Here is the known applications I found. So you may well have a '69 400 or 428 head.

image.png.b4fd15284162a8a2b63d8974800f82e3.png

The 400 or 428s with 46 heads were designated to go in the B-body full size cars or G-body cars (the GP). The GP as well as the B-bodies could have either the 400 or 428.

J338 and J348 are your casting dates.

A-L = January to December  (J = October)

33/34 is suppose to be the day it was cast - although 33 and 34 are not valid dates in any given month.

8 = calendar year - in this case 1968.

Therefore it stands to reason that these are '69 model year heads since these were cast in October 1968, which would be the '69 model year.

Big thank you frosty

the guy I got them off had swapped them out for bigger valve heads as he had put a butler striker kit in his 400

I paid $50 for them … justA grabbed them as a justA in case I need them

Thanks Bob , certainly are 69 heads .. the valves measure roughly 1.6 and 1.9

Frosty what’s with that chart of yours regarding compression ratio ?
am I reading it right when it says 10.1 cr for the 69 heads ?
guess I should try and work out their volume some how ?

That’s the info that came with the Wallace Racing data table I used. Sometimes it gives me the compression ratio, some times I get the number of head’s cc’s.

Happy Birthday..Many More...

Cheers two lane !!!

i sooo need to talk to you about building this 400 !!!

I would really appreciate your thoughts

on how and what to use

To Whom it may concern..

From what I'm able to gather the #46 Cylinder heads with the 10 C.R (compression Ratio) and the valve size 1.91 intake valve..1.66 Exhaust valve have 72 cc.. Combustion Chambers...Starting around 1973/74..#46 heads..Have Hardened Valve Seats and Larger...98+cc Sized Combustion Chambers with the 2.11 intake..1.77 Exhaust valves...In order to lower the Compression Ratio And to Slow the velocity of the Airflow into the Cylinders...Along with the Addition of Catalytic Converters and Electronic Ignition modules in the distributor...To be Compatible With the lower Octane Unleaded Gas..To lower the Exhaust Emissions be Being Mandated at the time...

Kiwi...

A Couple of Questions..

What Rear End gear ratio do plan on running..??

Automatic or Manual transmission..??

If an Automatic Do want to use the Stock Torque Converter..??

What is the typical pump gas octane rating in your part of the world..??

Power Brakes..??

Strictly Street driven or Occasional track use..??

Do you want good low to Midrange Torque.. or high RPM Horsepower...??

  • Author

Hi two lane 👍

the diff will be the factory gears for the 68 gto which without looking up should be 2.7 -2.5 at a guess. I want street cruising gears but will add an posi head to it and I will justA have the turbo 350 rebuilt . And stock converter  bop pattern r200 and r700 are super rare here !!!

pump gas here is 91 93 95 amd 98 all unleaded

straight up street , with street class drags once every 5 -10 years at the rate I race these days !!!
Certainly power brakes with discs front and drum rear

I fancy as many cubes as we can get with all low rpm torque  I can get

and this one’s not going to be efi

I really like the edelbrock on the 64 with its 389 … so I am thinking kiss !! Keep it simple stupid 😜

does that help ?

That’s why I grabbed thouse  46 heads

being 1968 they could work nicely

but is 10cr to high for pump gas ? I am guessing they could be 78 cc ? But I am not sure , it’s justA what I have been finding on the forums when I search Pontiac’s 64 heads

I will defer to Two Lane’s expertise but 10:1 is near normal for modern performance cars. Your Hellcat motor is 9.5:1. My 392 NA Hemi is rated at 10.9:1. So your pump gas can handle 10:1.

I like the sound of that !!! Higher compression = louder motor 😜

If it’s too loud, they are too old!

My apologies to the old Z Rock  slogan and Ted Nugent!

I came across this block today !!!

xb

does it tell you it’s a 1967 400 motor ? image.thumb.png.a564344ae5345973749c699bea15a712.png

Edited by 64 kiwi boni

Sorry Kiwi, it does not. Pontiac used the XB code six times between 1965 and 1978. It was used in 389s, 400s, 350s, and the 301.

Your block’s casting date code should be by the distributor hole.

Your six or seven digit block casting code will tell us which engine and model year. It will start with 9, 4, or 5.

Ah!!!!!
thank you 🙏

never trust the internet aye !!!
a little more research and the owner tells me it’s out of his 69 firebird !!!
so I will be looking for a 9 by the dizzy

which means it’s a 350

The casting date is by the dizzy. The block cast code should be elsewhere .
