Glad you got a deal. I shudder to think what the shipping bill would be like if you didn't have your CA connection.

Frosty, do you know if a 68 chevelle gas tank fits the gto ?

i have been offerd a brand new one for 300 nzd ! which is cheap

I would say it should fit, the same frame, both have the neck behind the L plate.

Kiwi - the short answer is yes. It should fit. JUSTA is correct.

I have heard that you need to check two things. First is the length of the filler neck of both tanks. I’ve heard some guys complain that the ‘68 filler neck is 2-3 inches shorter than the ‘69-72.

I have also heard that the filer neck angle on a Chevelle is slightly less than a Pontiac. You can bend it to fit but you want to make sure you don’t crack it and cause a leak in the process.

I’d spend my money on the Chevelle tank too! Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Thanks guys. $300 nzd is very much what I would pay the likes of opg or Ames

but less the 300-400 nzd in freight !

I know this as I have ordered a new gas tank for my 72 Camaro and it’s on its way down under

and I am paying $650 for it !!

Done 👍

When you get a chance, a side by side comparison might be educational for all of us. If you don’t mind.

I have gone to my local parts store before and no one has a Lemans/GTO part, but ask for the same part for a Chevelle, bingo! Here you go!

That happened to me last year when I had to replace the star wheel on the driver side drum brake of Lucy. I went to my local,Auto Zone.  No Pontiac, but yup - got one for a Chevelle!

The more I read

the more I agree ! Sooo much is chevelle !
I am soooo not complaining !  Say Pontiac to any nz shops and they look at your like your a Holden owner !
There is soo much more parts out there for Chevrolet A body’s … this is fun !
I so struggled to find options for the 64 Bonni !!!

The people at Tanks, Inc can sell you extension pipes for the fuel tank filler neck and the rubber connector that allows you to change the angle on it.  I had to do this with the Tanks "TM37C-T" part number (made for a 65-66 B-body Chevy Biscayne) tank for my Catalina.

Thanks Rick

I have used tanks Inc before 👍

this new tank doesn’t come with filler neck

so I can solder the one off the old tank on the new one by the sounds of it …

justA to cheap to not try and make the chevelle one work

but I will do what frosty suggested and line the new and old ones up to compair for future reference

The nice thing about the 68-72 GM A-body chassis and 2nd gen F-body subframe is that virtually all the suspension parts are interchangeable between all models. So except for the actual engine and transmission, all chassis parts are essentially the same. That should help you buy some more affordable parts for the '68.

hmmmmm, that means i could use f body stub axles and  discs rather than after market stuff !!!

as thats what my next purchase is going to be along with a front and rear bush kit....

ah, and the tanks on its way total of $335 including shipping from Auckland !! thats a bargin !!!!

Correct - the 2nd gen subframe is literally a copy of the A-body front geometry. So yes, you can use F-body control arms, spindles, shocks, drag link, and hubs. That's also why I can bolt up a thicker WS6 1.25" front sway bar from a Trans Am onto Lucy. All I need is the correct thickness bushing to install it. Those bushings were $8 at Autozone 15+ years ago.

I'm glad you went for it,It's going to be a beautiful Car.

Kiwi - don't forget, you should also be able to use a higher ratio steering box (16:1 or 12:1) from a 3rd gen IROC Z28 or WS6 Trans Am to improve steering response. It is a total bolt in replacement.

One step ahead of ya frosty !

pg hydraulics in Auckland say they can rebuild my box to be a quick ratio and do seals and give it a better road feel too .

i had this done to my 72 camaro one over 15 years ago ! And wow ! Did it change the whole behaviour of the car !! Wayyy nicer to drive !

so

the 63 wagon will get this treatment too

they are quoting me a grand  to do it

We want a blow-by-blow, cuss word-by-cuss word oral narrative as you take out the old tetanus laden beast and put in this shiny thing of beauty!

Oh with pictures of course.

And any ambulance rides or EMT videos would also be appreciated, laughed at, and the usual finger pointing will commence. We're here for you mate!
