Hmmmm… I don’t see a casting with those numbers, if I am reading it right. 9790916.

i don’t see any casting numbers with that combination. However I did find a 1970 350 YU engine code with a casting number of 9799916. It’s a 255 HP motor. 8.8 compression ratio. Automatic transmission car. #11 heads. Two barrel carb. #11 heads have a 1.96 intake and 1.66 exhaust valves.

350 2-barrels were the base engine in the Tempest and Lemans. However, this does not appear to be the numbers matching engine if it is a 1970 engine in a 1968 Lemans.

i agree with you !!!

recon its a 1970 350 motor based on what this guy has sent me

that means it will be a turbo 350 trans ???

I 100% agree with Frosty...That the engine is Not original to the car..The Number that is stamped on the the pad located on the front Right hand Bank of the engine block...Will be what tells the history...The last 4 digits of that number (9284..??) Will match the last 4 digits of The VIN # of the car it was originally installed in...Back in 1970/71...I would bet that the last 4 digits stamped on the Engine...Don't match the the last 4 digits of the VIn # of the car you're looking at...100% Guaranteeing that the engine is Not Original to the car..

It is more than likely (but not 100%) That the transmission is a Turbo 350..An easy way to identify a Turbo 350 Transmission...

The Turbo 350 will have a Manual Kick down cable that is attached to the transmission Via a 1/8 allen head bolt through a plastic O ring fitting that is located about an inch or so in front of the Dipstick Tube Where it goes into the Transmission Case...On the passenger side...Depending on the application the other end attaches to the side of the carburetor inconjuntion with the throttle cable...Although in certain instances the Kick down cable will run through the Firewall directly to the top of the gas pedal Assembly...

I know this is probably way too much unnecessary Info...It's 1:30 AM Friday Morning here...and I'm Bored and have Nothing Better to do...

To Two Lanes point, the 350TH was the standard automatic transmission for the 350 V8 along with a 10-bolt rear end. The diff would be open unless it was optionally ordered with a posi. I also suspect the car has no factory rear sway bar.

From the pic of the red car, I see there's a rather attractive bonnet mascot attached to it, in which case you should defo buy it.

The Boss...well, she'll have to get used to you spending extra time in the shed polishing it.

Yes, I said polishing it...

So Neal, when i am looking for parts i can hunt down chevelle parts and know they will fit ?

things like glass and suspension bits ?

Posted

Only word of caution is dont mix convertible glass with coupe glass. Suspension parts are interchangeable .

Another source of front suspension parts would be 1st and 2nd gen Camaros and Firebirds. The front subframe geometry of a F-body is essentially a cut off A-body frame. So control arms, sway bars, steering boxes, and engine mounts from a F-body interchange with the A-body.

What's nice is you can use the larger 2nd-gen WS6 Trans Am sway bar and bolt it to the '68 frame to improve handling for cheap. You can take a 3rd gen faster ratio steering box (stock A body is 24:1 - roughly 4.5 turns lock to lock), to around 12:1 or 16:1 from a 3rd gen IROC Z or WS6 TA.
