Ok! That’s all good! That should indicate about 34 degrees total advance. You are getting there! Doing what you’ve done is it still dieseling? If so to what degree?

Kiwi mentioned this so I’m just asking. Did you plug the vacuum line when disconnected? JustA so we know.

The last time I shut it off it did not diesel. Let me go double check it now.

Iv been unplugging the vacuum at the carb and justa putting a plug on the port. Today I got thinking about it and put a plug on the port and plugged the hose also.

Yeah man, I justa put 5 gallons in a couple days ago too. Today I paid $4.65 a gallon for mid grade. Premium was over $5

Since we are supposed to be respectful here, it makes it a little hard to get the proper point across about a total arse! A real man doesn’t offer an opinion about something he knows nothing about! That’s excellent Wrongway! I would hope all that may be left is some tweaking & using at least an 89 octane. But pay attention to it, you may need a 91 octane.

Ok, so I turned the idle up to about 1000rpm. Not sure yet where Pontiacs should be set. Let it warm up and turned her off. No dieseling. Started right back up, shut her off, no dieseling. My son did notice that the engine has a bit more vibration to it. Not really bad or noticeable, justa bit. So where do we go from here?

Come on man, enough is enough. We're all justa trying to get this damn engine running correctly. We've all had idea's, some proved out others didn't. Everything from gas to timing, to carbon. We've done every f*ing thing from rebuilding a brand new carb to pouring water through the engine to clean out the carbon to replacing every single part in the fuel system! I appreciate everybody's help and suggestions including yours. Last Indian stepped in with new perspective and different ideas and I'm glad he did. His shit seems to be working. So let's justa drop this and get back to hating Prius, talking shit about Ford's and wrenching on hotrods.

At this point I would maybe add 2 degrees more to the initial advance. You know, idle at about 500-600 rpm, no vac adv, timing at 8 degrees instead of 6. But first, as it sets right now, set the engine at the 500-600 rpm & adjust the idle mixture screws to see if you can smooth out the idle. Then change the timing. If that all pans out well I think you’re good.

bacon ok so I added 2° more. I unplugged the dist. and idled her back down to 550rpm. Double checked that at 6° we were still at #6 on the timing tab. Using the arrows I moved to 8° on the gun and moved the dist. to line back up with #6 on the tab. Locked down dist. and left the vacuum unhooked, port and line both plugged.

at 550rpm we read 8° at 6 on the timing tab (vac unhooked)

at 2500rpm we read 20° at 6 on the timing tab (vac unhooked)

at 1500rpm we read 33° at the 6 on the timing tab (vac connected)

and NO dieseling!!!!!!!!! cheers

So I was not able to drive her today because it is supposed to start raining any min and we felt sprinkles. But tomorrow we WILL be taking her a short ride to see how she does!

On a side note, does anybody know what these symbols are in the top left corner on the screen. I thought maybe a bad connection, but connections were good. This justa started today and did it two different times. These pics are of the second time. The first pic is when it first did it, the second is what it does a few seconds after. I unplug the cord from the gun and plug it back in and it works fine. Justa curious if my car is getting ready to kill another timing light?

I don’t really know, but maybe related to voltage looking at the V above the erratic figures. Maybe the induction pickup wasn’t making a good connection?

Really not sure either, but with the other timing light issues I thought I would ask. I am looking forward to a test drive tomorrow and reporting back!

Some things bothering me wrongway … when you said ….

I am not sure you are supposed to be referencing anything but Tdc on your timing tab !!!

When you dial 6 in your timing light

It flashes at 6 btdc and that’s looking at Tdc or zero on you tab !

When you change that setting in your timing light to 8 you’re still looking to line up your mark on the balancer with 0 on your tab .

You can prove this by setting your timing light to zero and you then should be reading 6-8 on your timing tab …

Then disconnect the vac adv. set the rpm’s at 500-600 in idle if you can. Take a reading. You want somewhere between 6 btdc & 12 btdc @ 500-600.

Then I may have misunderstood. I was lining up at 6 on the tab each time. I set 6° in the gun and lined up at 6 on the tab. I'm now at 8° on the gun and lined up with 6 on the tab. Every change I made I went back to 6 on the tab with the mark on the balancer because that's where I started. It seems to be running strong and no dieseling. But if it's not correct, I can always change it.

here is what the web says about your timing light mate ...

  1. Check Base Timing: With the advance display set to , observe where the flash illuminates the marks. If it doesn't align with your spec, you may need to physically rotate the distributor.

  2. Digital Advance (Dial-Back): To check advance, press the Advance Increment (+) button until the timing mark on the balancer aligns with the "0" mark on the timing pointer. The number on the digital display is your current timing.

so.. does that make sense ?

They didn’t have those kind in the day. So I’ve never used one. To me it’s kind of stupid. Why would I not want to see the timing show where it actually is? Probably just me. The Indian can’t use one, all computer crap! The two Z’s both had 50 degree markings scribed on the harmonic in both + & - so the timing tab was just a pointer. And we all know Chevys love timing.

Ok, so I watched the video, thank you. But now I'm confused, do I need to redo it with 8° on the timing light and 0 on the timing tab or take it for a drive or??? I'm more than willing to redo it before the test drive if need be. It's sounding like I should redo it?

short answer, try it at 6 first, then if she likes it try 8 degrees.

like last indian said too mate, read a-justa your mixture too. P

I would drive it, but pay attention if it seems odd then bring it back & redo it. Looking quickly at the video, I believe he is saying what I assumed when you gave the numbers. When you gave 8 degrees on 6 I basically added the two together giving me 14 degrees @ 550 rpm. @ 2500 no vac you gave 20 degrees @ 6 = 26 & @ 1500 everything hooked up 33 degrees @ 6 = 39. Now you added 2 more degrees initially totaling 41 degrees total! If that is all correct you should be ok. Yet it is possible that will prove to be too much. If it actually is the opposite then we would have to deduct 6 degrees from each of those numbers, but I don’t believe that’s the case. 6 degrees off each of those numbers would not be enough timing. So run it! See what it’s like, but be mindful. Then when you bring it back go through it as Kiwi suggests, but leave the settings as they are. Just recheck using zero instead of 6 & see what the numbers yield.
