Hello Chris,

I love your level of enthusiasm!! Any thoughts to getting the car media blasted or dipped before diving in any deeper to reveal the tin worm damage?

Rick

Hi Rick , I did think about soda blasting but, I have decided to work at it one panel at a time . And it’s not my number one job ! The 63 wagon is ! But until certain parts are here the 63 is on hold .

It was good to find how bad the iron moth as frosty called it, had got into the rear window area !!! The trunk floor is still ok !!! Which I am surprised considering how many years that rear window would have been leaking !!!

Those iron moths did a number on the package tray!

You should be able to use a package tray from any GM A-body Kiwi. Chevrlle, Skylark, Cutlass/442, or GTO/Lemans/Tempest/Custom S.

frosty, i emailed opg and this is what they said......

Hi Chris,

Thank you for reaching out to OPGI with your inquiry. Unfortunately, we only carry sheet metal Package Tray for 1964-65 Pontiac GTO and not for a 1968 Pontiac GTO. The sheet metal package tray you’ve included in your email is for a 1968-72 Chevelle which unfortunately will not work for your vehicle.

Thank you,

what are your thoughts on this ? i recon they used the same parts ???

I call bullshit on OPG. The Chevelle package tray may require some subtle tweaking to account for possible dimensions difference between the Chevelle exterior sheet metal and a GTO/Lemans but these cars share so many parts it would be embarrassing.

Have you checked Frank’s Pontiac Parts lately?

Make you own? From say a bent rusty hood?

i was of the same thoughts ! chevelle should be close, dont they share the same back screen Frosty ?

making one from scratch is option 2 !!

Yes they do Kiwi. That’s why I am stunned by OPGI’s answer.

I see on thier web site there is a “ask an expert “ button . After work I will make contact and ask the question .

This looks to be a cool project; the car does have lots of potential. One thing I have to mention though is my mind exploded when I saw the magazine spread on page one featuring a '68 GTO with a rare endura front bumper delete option. That's actually crazy; I never heard of that at all. If you were to do a GTO CLone with this car, that may be a neat way to go

Remember that the endura bumper was introduced in 1968. It was unlike any other bumper at the time. The endura bumper delete option saved the buyer around $50.

Frosty , all my on line reading keeps saying a chevelle package tray metal won’t fit the 68 gto , they have diffent back windows , how ever the 68 Grand Prix does have the same back window as a chevelle and its package tray is the same …. Do you know anyone who we can ask if in fact a chevelle one would work ?

I will have to ask around some of my non-Pontiac friends Kiwi. A Grand Prix makes sense since it is essentially an elongated Pontiac A-body. Let me do some digging.

its a super common part to rust out in a super popular car

omg !!! how did you find that last indian ?

whats the bet its a chevelle part and thats why they are saying the package tray "may need to modified"

1968 Pontiac GTO/LeMans/Tempest REAR SEAT DIVIDER/PACKAGE SHELF PANEL FOR COUPE (MAY NEED TO BE MODIFIED BY THE PACKAGE TRAY AREA) | BP10669V

i only need the top section and if she was a chevelle, i could buy the top section from jegs for $192 usd and $20 freight to kiwi shipping .

No joke, this part look justa like what i have in the gto , but i wont know untill i have it in hand, i so have half a mind to justa buy a chevelle one and post what it truelly needs to fit a gto !

i am sure i am sooooo not the first one to encounter this rofl

i can make most sheet metal parts but this panel has a lot going on !

IMG_8123.jpeg

Note how the stamping looks justA like a chevelle one !

this little add-on to my tig torch will help heaps around that back window that needs lots of love !!! cheers

Kiwi, everything I see & read seems to indicate the 68 Chevelle part works with some minor mods. What those are I’m not sure, but it’s got to be close knowing GM. So a welder, grinder, maybe cut away some sheet metal or add some.

Here’s another site that sells the panel.

Thats my gut feeling too last indian!!! the curves, the stampings look sooo simliar ! i have already mapped in my brain how i could make each section , but it takes a lot of time .... it sound easy ! but this top section has a lot going on ..... curves planes, and i can make it ! but it will need to be in 3 sections to make it all work and look correct ...... with age we are suppose to get smarter !! hence wanting to find a panel thats already made ..... BUT at a realistic price !!! i justa got burnt importing a opg gto hood !! that thing cost me near 3k by the time i bolted it on the car !! thats crazy money ! no thanks to the usd to nzd !!! and shipping costs!

jegs sell a package tray metal for $192 usd its justa the top section, and thats a price i am happy to buy at .... i guess that by the time i get it here it will be near $800 nzd.. at my door .

the panel steel will cost me $50nzd, my time ... to make ... and i am guessing here .... 2 days say 16 hours .

but !! will i be able to make it look right !!! willy_nilly

i will need to think about this.

Kiwi I get that 100%!

Here’s another site. It’s in Australia. So maybe there are others? Maybe even one that has an outlet or whatever in NZ?
