Wrongway , thank you for the advise on brakes , I have had a great response from Chris at auto city and I am buying a complete front and rear disc kit from him

I wanted the drilled and slotted discs and they will be available in 90 days. So I am happy to wait .

Chris,

Drilled and / or slotted disks look good but they can't be turned back to true flat on the lathe at repair time. These disks are a one and done kind of thing.

Rick , by the time they need a reserface i will be 150 years old at the rate i do the miles !!!

Ah, Chris . . . don't say that.   I had one of the disk pads on the front of my El Camino catastrophically crumble away to nothing which allowed its backing plate to gouge ruts into the slotted and drilled rotor.  At about 20,000 miles and only a few years of use.

I put regular old rotors on after that because a regular rotor could have been saved in this situation.

Guys i would like your thoughts on going down the 4.50 stroker crank in a 400 block path..... as you know i am wanting to build a nice horny engine for the 68 but , i keep reading about bigger isnt better !

now my thinking is more cubes = more fun .

but is there a point where that fun turns into dollars wasted ?

rembereing the goal here is a street engine...

Please let me know your thoughts

If this is going to be strictly a street engine, and not some sort of street/strip engine, how much power do you really want to make in order to have fun? A 400 block bored +.030 over and a 4.50 stroke puts you around 487 cubic inches. So would a 500-550ish HP motor be enough to have fun on the streets and scare all the sheep in NZ?

Personally, for a Pontiac street motor, I wouldn’t got beyond 500 cubes. Otherwise you have to pay for more expensive race hardened engine parts, ditto for the transmission, driveshaft, differential and brakes. Cha-Ching! Why build a race car just for the street? I wouldn’t want you to have to cut back on your beer and pizza money just to get that super wiz-bang roller rocker camshaft! LOL!

I would consider fuel injection though for ease of tuning and reliability.

If you show some restraint in the whole drivetrain, you could spend your savings on a kick ass paint job, wheels and tires, and a comfy interior!

That’s my opinion bro!

A 490 ci something with some decent heads that gives you good compression(Edelbrock maybe) solid lifter flat tappet healthy cam (a lot cheaper then a roller) something that doesn't need stupid valve springs.

Induction of your choice, what else do you need?

Good deal.

Speaking from my own experiences, make sure you cc those heads if you are going to use them so you don't end up with a compression you don't want. I found out when looking for my heads a lot of lists with head # aren't correct and heads may have been cut.

So with only 2 days left of holidays … it’s my time !!!!!!

No wife … oops ok , wife yes … but you get my point !!!… I sooo wanted to get something done on the 68 !!!! So today I hit the bonnet that arrived with a small dent ,,,, this thing had cost me way more than it should !!! I paid opg $390 usd … by the time I got it here in Taupo nz … I had no change out of $2700 nzd !!!! No joke !!!

Am I pisted !!!! Yeah ! I won’t be doing that again . Opg wacked me with over $300 usd justA to ship it to ca to kiwi shipping yard , Matt did a great job of shipping even though it took 8 months !!!!

Then I got wacked with tax , and a whole bunch of bs fees . And then more shipping to get it from Wellington to Taupo …. What a saga !!!

Any who !!!! It’s here with a dent and today I fixed it !

I bought myself a glue on dent puller and it actually worked !!!!

So off with the rusted out window to trunk panel . So I could see how bad the underside panel was ….. and it was completely missing !!!

I then trial fitted the window to trunk panel , and it didn’t fit ! Both ends needed a bit of massaging and that’s as far as I will go with that panel until I source a New package tray panel , hopefully they are the same as chevelle

IMG_8131.jpeg

IMG_8133.jpeg

An with a couple of hour left in the day I started on the replacement patch panels for around the sides and top of the rear screen ,,, I am going to have to remove the lot and remake new ones, this is made oh soooo much easier with a shrinking machine !!!!

Hello Chris,

I love your level of enthusiasm!! Any thoughts to getting the car media blasted or dipped before diving in any deeper to reveal the tin worm damage?

Those iron moths did a number on the package tray!

You should be able to use a package tray from any GM A-body Kiwi. Chevrlle, Skylark, Cutlass/442, or GTO/Lemans/Tempest/Custom S.
