Hello World, I look forward to meeting fellow Pontiac enthusiasts from around the world.

I am the proud owner of a 1969 Pontiac GP with a 455 stroker under the hood. I purchased this car almost two years ago here in Western Australia. The car had been converted to a Right Hand Drive and in fair condition. Just over 12 months ago I took the car in to my mechanic’s workshop for a full service & tuneup… DAM we found it had low to no compression in one of the cylinders and off with it’s head was required. Long story short, I only recently found a usable head to replace the No good one (geez it’s hard to find parts in in general let alone in Australia!) With fingers crossed I’ll have my pride & joy back on the road sooner than later. 👍🏻

Hi Spike. In case you're not aware, Ames Performance is a US based dedicated 'Pontiac only' purveyor of parts. Butler Performance is also all about Pontiac and Rockauto will look after all your generic requirements. These places are indispensable for anything Pontiac related.

I'm just north of Cairns and built my 65 GP using plenty of parts from these places, amongst others.

Good on Yu Fitzy mate, I appreciate the parts leads. Owning a 53 yo car I’m sure more parts will be needed in the future.

Yep - that's a good point. Forgot all about Dave. Soz Davo.

Spike - also Frank's Pontiac Parts for bits off wrecked cars and there are several US classic car wreckers such as Desert Valley Autos, but be prepared to bend over and take it. I chose not to bend over and fixed what I had.

Welcome to the Pow Wow Spike! If you can’t find other heads you should be able to salvage the 401’s, but that will take machine work which cost money. So if you can find another set of heads that would be the ticket.

G’day Last Indian mate 👍🏻, (I’m just learning how to navigate this cool website).

yeah, with a little TLC and mechanical wizardry I reckon we should be able to bring one of the heads back to life. I only need the one to replace the “too far gone head” and if I’m lucky I’ll have a couple more internals from the 401 parts motor to sell on and try to recoup a few bucks back in the kitty.

Fitzy and Kiwi are the most vocal members from your neck of the southern hemisphere. We still give them crap and they return it in kind. It's all good. So feel free to jump in.

Don't give up entirely on that motor. She can be sleeved, bored, and stroked as you know. The bolt running loose on the passenger side head is astonishing. Since you will salvage the one good head for your '69 GP, I would expect you getting a set of aftermarket heads and other goodies for this motor and really make it a real screamer.

Spike, even the head that had damage from the bolt can be fixed if need be! There are several ways in which it can be restored, so don’t scrap it unless you really don’t need it. Backup parts are always a plus.

Cool, it took me over 12 months T find this old motor & the owner had no history on it. A complete gamble for $1000 (AUD). Still I would have paid the $1K just for the head if it came down to it. What the video didn’t show was the crack in the block (I ain’t no mechanic) so I missed this crack crap! 
it would have been nice to score a few more useable or resaleable parts.

Ok, for instance, that’s the water jacket side. So you will, presuming it’s not something you do, find a shop that knows how to weld cast iron, it take a special welding rod. The expansion plug will need to be removed. The crack will need to be grooved the entire length & even into the plug area. Than the plug area will need to be rebored to the proper size so a expansion plug can be re installed. Additionally before doing this the block will need to be clean thoroughly to remove any contamination of oil & antifreeze that might effect the adhesion of the welding.

The question i would be asking, is .... where are the other cracks! 

and thats a job for a machine shop that can magnaflux the block after its cleaned.

For now (with a restricted budget) I’ll just be getting the best of the two heads overhauled and fitted to the current motor in my car. That’s my end goal just to get the car running all ticketyboo 👍🏻 And use the car in a couple of short film ideas I have planned. Plus with our summer just around the corner I’m keen to just go for a cruise…. Ooooo Yeah!

That’s from running non leaded fuel & not using an additive to resolve the lack of no lead in the fuel!
