Morgan, I don't think I've ever seen you legitimately angry. That would be a sight to behold.

  • Well the HID kit is fully removed and sitting in my garage, my buddy only found ONE Sunfire of my generation at the junkyard near him, so he grabbed all the wire harnesses for the lights and such. So

  • I'm photo sensitive. One time I drove with night vision goggles. I mananged to pass a cop LOL

  • Photos: />http://s930.photobucket.com/albums/ad148/PulmonaryHobo/DDM%20HID/ Hoping to install them very soon.

record the reaction! anyways, have you taken pics as they progress?

I have not taken any, but I know a few photos are laying around. Sadie you are correct, you have never seen me actually mad. I usually just try and shake it off, when I was younger I would just throw a tantrum and swear, now its usually just swearing or yell if I am by myself. Out in public however I just keep my mouth shut and usually don't say anything to anyone until I am happy again.

Just a few that I could find.

Stock TYC's (we had to buy a new set because one of the old TYC's bulb housings was melted, so we had to buy a new set.)

After that, Jeff has to bake them so the sealant become soft and then he can pull them apart (we ran into the largest possible delay with one of them not coming apart, but the other is done now).

Then he pulls out the stock reflectors and drills a hole so he can run the wires to the LEDs (no photo of this).

Then Jeff had to place the new LEDs in the space where the old reflectors go.

This is also where Jeff ran into another problem, he had to take off the cover for the amber lenses because they sat too high and the clear cover would not fit, so he had to sand them down just a bit to fit (pretty much the finished product in this photo, just the clear cover isn't on and the red reflector is not centered).

nice. are they bright?

He did hook them up to a battery for me when I was there last, and they are STUPID bright. My current brake lights are as bright as the Leds just being normally lit, while the LEDs brakes are at least twice as bright. We had them on in the basement with the lights on in the room, and they were blindingly bright lol! The amber ones are ridiculously bright too. Hopefully we can get them in next weekend so I can take a video :D

awesome. im jelly. i want mine super bright so i can tint darker.

:D

Can try and find some aftermarket tail lights like those TYC's, and tear them apart and go to a semi truck accessory shop and buy some leds that will fit in the stock slots lol

hmmm...maybe i will look around. and you have semi truck lights in those?

  • Author

Yup, the red ones are 4" circular lights I would assume from a rig itself, and the ambers are 2 1/2" I believe also. There are all sorts of rig accessory places, you just have to look around. There are also a lot online, but they are costly online. I think for my lenses was a total of like $50 tops.

are you going to do your reverse lights too?

  • Author

Nah, I already have those replaced with LEDs I bought from superbrightleds.com If I have spare 3157 Bulb (OEM one) I can take a comparison photo for you right now, let me check.

I prefer the tinted look over the clear lens look but they are nice.

  • Author

Well I never said I wouldn't tint these, but my friend Jeff who is making them said that would make it pointless, seeing the leds is the whole idea, but I might tint them in the long run.

I think the leds with tint would look awesome when they light up IMO.

On a side not I just re did my tinted non leds tails and they look great on a silver car. ;) did you see them yet in my Prog thread?

  • Author

I don't think so. I used to run tinted tails, but decided to go with aftermarket, and then do a LED conversion that way Sadie and I are not copying each other lol!

Anyway, for comparing my LED Reverse Bulbs with the OEM, I took some photos. Couldn't find my spare bulb so I stole one out of my Dad's Saturn.

(Sorry about these, they appear dimmer but its because the camera was tilted towards the OEM)

Both of these are the LEDs.

Same, both are the LEDs.

Something completely random, my current mileage.

Im thinking of getting some of thouse for my brake / blinkers bulbs.

If you do, make sure they're white! Red LEDs will not shine bright enough through the red lens.

Added, make sure you buy load resistors as well. LED bulbs use such little voltage, your signals will blink fast, as if a bulb is out. But don't worry, splicing in load resistors are simple.

I was always told to buy the same color as the lenses when it comes to LEDs... Also, when I tried using using the single LED per rear tail light (each bulb had the three functions: brake light, turn signal, and on.) they wouldn't work for all three functions. I believe the only ones that worked were the brake lights. So make sure you do get load resistors. Otherwise they will blink fast or in my case with there just being one bulb per lens, they won't have all functions. Also I need to get some load resistors for my LEDs I just purchased for my front bumper lenses, I know those won't blink won't unless I have my parking lights on at least.

I've been told the same thing. As far as the bulbs go, the only thing I don't like is that since they are directional, they create hot spots and don't utilize the reflector in the housing nearly as much. It only really bothers me if it's one little bulb in a large housing. They work perfectly for Morgan's reverse lights, though.

Red isn't as bright as white, and you want the brighter light going through the red lens.

The red I have in my rear sidemarker lenses is plenty bright. The only worry I would have with white light in a red lens is if it made the lens appear pink because it's so bright.

Technically from that discussion that I posted, is that white leds are not white, but usually a mix of different colors to make it appear white with phosphorus or whatever. Eventually that stuff wears down and only the certain colors will remain, which would make it very dim in the red lens seeing only a small portion of red light would be filtered through.

Anyhoo:
