I have a snippet of faintly 'Pontiac related' news. The hydrostatic drive on the GT Mow was playing up, so rather than pay someone $1000 to look at it, I figured I could screw it up all by myself. After hours of tinkering, consulting the manual, swearing & sweating, I actually fixed it. If you are in a similar situation, be warned that hydrostatic drives are unlike any other animal you may have encountered. Forget what you think you know and do what the manual says. As I was laying under it making adjustments as the manual directed, it all felt wrong, counterintuitive. Well, I gave in and did what the manual said and the bloody thing (for the first time since I was gifted it) actually finally works the way it's supposed to. I am sitting here in a celebratory mood enjoying a well deserved beer congratulating myself on a job well done.

So, I decided to reward myself and ordered a Grant woodrim steering wheel from Ames for the GP. I now think of the hours I wasted lovingly bringing the cracked old original wheel back to life when all I ever wanted was a woodrim one - it'll match the walnut fascia. The money I saved on the mower will easily cover the cost. Cheers!

Breaking news: I have decided to offer a 'Spider Conversion Kit.' Suits any Pontiac. I have turned the GP into a Spider. Three easy steps:

(1) Remove carb and send to Jupiter to be rebuilt.

(2) Let car sit.

(3) Spider conversion will take place automatically.

Hurry - order yours now!

It's the Web Of Intrigue, as in where the f@#k is my carby???

Here's a hot tip for any other International Viewers: shipping costs are now officially stratospheric. The cost of getting a steering wheel from the US to Oz is almost as much as the item itself. Oh well, it's only money. What else was I gonna do with it?

Has your car still have stock ignition and if so check your vacuum advance under the cap and check your points as well it really don't sound like a fuel issue.and if that's been done I don't know how to follow topics yet

Best possible advice - ever.

Oh and send the wreck to Kiwi. He needs another POS in his life. If not for the shear spite of it and the look on his boss's face when another carcass rolls into the yard! Priceless! It's what friends do!

No - car has Pertronix and vac advance works perfectly. Entire ignition system is new except for original dizzy. If it's not the carb I will sell the car and buy a Corolla and paint racing stripes on it.

Wreck? POS? I sure hope you're not referring to my immaculate Pontiac Spider?

I was trying to talk to 64 kiwi boni on that. I think your grand prix is rather sharp looking.

Yeah - way cooler than that white 'beached whale'  in New Zealand.

Your car looks like a metallic blue - suits it down to the ground. I've never really liked red as a car colour but feel obligated to retain it.

Of course not! The "Spider" has the lovely Frosty Memorial Tach in it!

I was referring to the destroyed Lincoln in Animal House video.

That red looks good and I'm not a red fan. My paint is called Sebring blue I like the color but would like it darker

I see - got it. I remember Animal House. Watching it was yet another rite of passage as a young beer soaked man.

It's really faded and patchy but gives the car it's barn find look. If you look WAY back on my thread you'll see how I sandpapered & polished it to get it up to it's current 'lustre.' It looked really trashed when I first got it.

Anyway, blue is my fave and if money was no object (believe me, it's an object) I'd go for something like yours. Gives the car a touch of class. Red says 'old man trying to reclaim the shreds of his youth!'

The carb rebuilder called me today. Carb is almost finished - he said they found 'multiple issues' so it should be sweet when it comes home. There's a lesson here: running a rebuild kit through your carb is all well & good but you're only scratching the surface. Anyway, he said that Carters were absolutely prolific through the 60s and they were an excellent carb but there were so many variations because each model was tailored specifically for certain cars. You can't just pick up any old AFB, bolt it on and expect it to run right- it's gotta be the right carb for the right model. According to the little ID tag on mine, it is correct for my spec. The carb model # is also stamped into the perimeter base but I couldn't read mine. I told Kiwi all this but he had already whipped out his credit card and has gone for an AVS2. I'm hoping both scenarios have a happy ending.

One more thing - I keep looking at my front bumper and the chrome is shot in places. I sourced a quote about a year ago and the dude reckoned about $2k. I finally stopped moaning about it and thought I'd go ahead so got a follow up quote. 'About $4k' he said. The friggin car only cost 12k in the first place. I am NOT paying 4k. I'd rather bend over and cop the horrendous shipping to the US and have it rechromed over there or pick up a decent secondhand one.

So, if you're tooling about and you come across a front bumper for a 65 GP/Bonny/Catalina/Parisienne and it looks okay, let me know will you? It's a great excuse to come over and then bring it home (via Hooters, of course.)

"Why does he keep going on about Hooters???"

If it's not bent up, think about powder coating??  They have chromelike paint that looks very good on rims I've seen done.

No luck on bumpers at the indoor swap meet mate. I looked. I might have more luck at the outdoor swap meets in the spring.

Who doesn't like Hooters?

i would shop around Fitzy .. 4 k sounds too high.

i have not had a quote for mine yet but i will at some stage. in the mean time i will ask my other mate named Pete, who is the mopar nut what sort of dollars he has been paying for chrome work. But i am sure its not 4 k ! even in nzd !

i once bought a repo 56 bumper and the chrome was of poor quality, at least if you get it rechromed by someone on your side of the water you have some recourse if it starts to fail.

Regarding the avs 2, i pulled the trigger a few days ago and went with one from speedway motors, its been tied to the under side of a seagull and it will be here in nz around christmas 2029:rofl:

You can be assured I shall be shopping around. As far as powdercoating goes, I asked someone about it and I can't now remember why he said it wouldn't work. Maybe he said 'he' wouldn't work. I then looked into getting it wrapped but that bloke was concerned as to all the contours and intricacy of the shape. These guys must have so many customers that they can afford to show me the door. I then thought of getting it sandblasted and polishing the metal then clearcoating it. Any thoughts on that last one? Someone said that the UV will eventually make it turn yellow but the car sits undercover all the time.
