So I went down to one of the pick your part wrecking yards in the area a removed a TH2004r transmission, that was an adventure, laying on my back out in the yard with a whole pile of floor mats I found in other cars.

First had to remove the pan that was damaged to make sure there was no other damage inside, that was ok except for that I made a mess of myself.

Had to wrestle it on my dolly by myself but got help to lift it in to my Tahoe from one of the guys at the yard.

No the research start on how to go about getting it rebuilt, might turn it in to a project and do it myself.

DO. NOT. FORGET. THE. THROTTLE. VALVE. CABLE. HERE.  Otherwise, you will very quickly melt the clutch packs in that transmission.  The cable needs good tension and alignment to properly govern internal line pressures.

Good score Andy 👍

what did you pull it out of ?

It was a 86 El Camino that must have run over something stout, the front x member was bent bad, you can see the engine and trans pan in the pictures.

The trans x member was bent back so that the trans mount was busted and the rear of the trans was hanging on the driveshaft, exhaust was missing, the wrecking Yard had cut the cooler lines so it came out pretty easy just had problems with the converter bolts because the engine was här to turn over because of the oil pan.

Had the pan of to check for damage and it looked clean Inside.

Last night my buddy texted me a told me he had a good used pan for free.

Andy, what engine did you unbolt this from and what are you mounting this to? There are two 200 4R cases. One is the BOP bolt pattern, the other is a Chevy bolt pattern. If you pulled it out of an El Camino with a SBC vs. a Buick 3800, you might have the wrong case.

This one had the multi case and fits both, i believe most of them where this way.

Even though this was a Chevy you could see the extra ears on top sticking up, I've heard that there is a Chevy only one also but not as common. It's going behind my Pontiac 350.

I agree with everything you said. My concern was that the Chevy-only case would most likely be found in the Chevy G-bodies like the El Camino and Monte Carlo behind a small block Chevy.

Yes i new that it was a possibility so I checked before pulling it,this one was so picked over that it was easy to stand in the engine compartment and look down on the bell housing and you could see the ears sticking up on top, this one had the 4.3 V6.

Yes indeedy - TH400. I'm not crawling under the car again - it'll do until I find the inspiration to have a look.

Thanks Andy - I had a look online and there you go: all sorts of articles & how to's.

Took a couple of more turns on the regulator and took a couple of pictures at the same time. You can see the screw driver slot inside the tube.

Been driving it for a few weeks on the weekends now and it ran ok but developed a miss at idle and after checking compression (all170-180psi) adjusting the valves I finally found an intake leak, the gasket had probably slipped down when I installed it and the bolt got partially pushed right through the gasket.

Replaced the gasket, installed a160f thermostat and installed my AF ratio meter,  was able to dial in the idle mixture now but it's still lean under certain conditions when driving so I ordered a tuning kit today.

So I we spent about $300 on tuning a used carburetor that I got for free so far 😆

Had a chance to run the AC last weekend a bit and it's looking promising but we will see when it gets really hot.

Still need to take the heater box out and fix the water leak so I can install the carpet.

Not to much getting done right now, ripped a vaulted ceiling down to shim it down and insulate so that's been keeping me busy, painted the walls with first coat and wife decided that she didn't like the color so one step forward and two back.

Have been driving it on the weekends and replaced the keys and needles a couple of times to try to get the mixture right but first I had to get the AFR meter to work right,it would read but after while driving it would drift lean until it pegged and all I got was some dashes instead of numbers.

Ordered a new Bosch O2 sensor and it's working so far, made a few test runs last weekend and cruise and slight power is pretty good but still lean on full throttle so next step is to change the jets on the secondaries, also have an hesitation when rolling and then punching it do I'm going to adjust the spring tension on the air valve for the secondaries.

My daughter loves to take it out for one of her coffee runs with a friend.

I never had any luck with them in the past but my friends like them so when this 350 engine was given to me for free one was on it so I figured I'd give it a go and really try to get it working right.

But this is a used one not new so we will see.

Really like the idea of using this AFR meter instead of guessing, reading plugs and using a wigi board.

A good friend of mine that used to own a transmission Shop before he started working for Cummins took my TH200-4R appart that i got from pick ur part a while back.

Trans looked pretty good, don't need any clutches or band but he found some splines that didn't look so good and also a accumulator spring that was broken.

A shift kit had already been installed at the last rebuild.

Brought it to work in pieces and washed it all last night and now I just have to find someone to weld the cut by the cooler lines on the case that the hacks at the wrecking yard had made.

oh oh oh ! is that how they removed the cooler line ?

Probably, they just cut them off to drain the fluid, didn't pay attention and missed and cut the case instead and I didn't see it until I got it home.

Going up to another buddy of mine tonight and he is going to weld it.

Trans case repaired, not super pretty but it should work. I'll bring it back to work and run it in the washer one more time tomorrow.

Most of the parts for the trans has come in,and by come in my buddy went over to the trans parts place he uses.

He got a rebuilt pump with more vanes and also a rebuilt planetary that wasn't quite up to par according to his standards.

Goon to drop of the repaired case and other parts that I cleaned to him at the donut shop tomorrow.

We are still discussing how to engage the converter lock up, he likes a vacuum switch and 4th gear switch I have used 4th gear switch only in the past and another friend suggested using a speed switch so we will have to see what direction we go.

I'm in it about $400 so far+ the core.

Trying to insert a picture but it got a heic format and don't work, have to try later.

Now i got it to work.😁
