I am Definitely in Trouble Now

Featured Replies

I really have no advice to offer except for that since his grades weren't all that great and he's going to have to wait a bit longer now for a truck, why not look around some more?

It's almost winter and people tend to want to get rid of things before the winter. At least in my experience... Maybe you can score something better for cheaper.

That's certainly a possibility. The man with the truck has been trying to sell it for a year now, so I am not too worried that it will sell soon either. I do intend to look around locally a bit more. I had a talk with the kid on the way to scouts on Tuesday night. I am trying to make it very clear that he needs to step up his efforts a lot more if we are going to get this thing..

The boy's birthday is in 2 weeks. He hasn't given us any idea on what to get him. Guess what he asked for again?

A homerun batting title?

I wish - on both your suggestions.

We were driving home from my in-laws house on Sunday after his last game and he brought the topic up. Mom laid down the law this time and said he had to figure out when he was going to find time to work on it with school work and his desire to do cross country, scouts, baseball, basketball, track, and snowboarding. Somethings have got to give. What is it going to be? He didn't have an answers. So at this point, I think the result is still the same....no truck until he gets committed to the project and starts making some things priorities over others. I think he will give up scouts. The rest I am not too sure about.

Well I am not sure where this is going to go.

The kid is in deep doo-doo with his grades right now. He made the freshman baseball team but his grades just might get him benched. We have only 2 weeks left in the season, so timing is everything right now.

Today I ran across this ad on Craigslist. The problem is - this is all of 5 miles from my house. So at this point, I've only told my wife about this.

WOW....Lotta work there.

I look at it this way, if he is going to do the resto on it and work and pay for it fine, but as soon as it just sits there collecting dust YOU have a truck!

Right now ghamdi_2006, given the kid's propensity to procrastinate, not turn in his homework, cop an attitude when he's hungry, cranky, or tired, and get poor results on his tests, I look at it this way. I have not wasted $1000.00 for a truck shell at all (as much as I'd love to do this sucker up right my way). I laid out the ground rules back when he was 12 when we saw the first truck back in West Virginia. It didn't sink in then, I feel it won't stick now. Perhaps once he takes driver's education and he wants a car, perhaps he might get some ambition. But I am still waiting for that day because he's been allowed (by mom) to not do anything around the house.

How old is he?

Old enough to know better but young enough still to learn.

Havoc - he's 14. He will be 15 in mid-July and old enough to take driver education here in Michigan this summer. He can't get his license until he turns 16, but he can get all his prerequisite driving time in (day and night time hours once he gets his permit).

If he has a pipe dream of mom and dad paying for and building a classic truck for him and he doesn't have to lift a finger to get it, he's got another thing coming. It isn't going to happen on my watch. That's for damn sure.

Well the ad on Craigslist is gone. I have to assume that the truck was sold. So I am off the hook for the moment. There are a couple of 49 and 52 Chevys with dually rear axles available in the area for less than $4k. Dually would be kinda cool but a rough ride at some point.

His mother said "we" (meaning him and me) have to work out where we are going to store and work on it. I am waiting for him to initiate that discussion. I am tired of talking about this with him with little or no action or effort on his part. I'd love to do this project but I won't do it in a vacuum either. Plus I still man cave space for my own cars.

Love the way you think my friend. Yes, that is the answer to a lot of these issues is a pole barn.

Two problems - money and location. I figure it will cost between $15-$25k to cement and build the rough structure (finished exterior and rought interior). Another $10-15k (with me doing a lot of the work) to insulate, run electrical, heat, drywall and paint, and then furnish cabinets, etc. to complete the pole barn. So we need to dedicate $25-40k worth of money to this project and it has to come from somewhere.

The second problem is last summer I had a contractor come out, he laid out the proposed size of the pole barn in the back yard. It was the maximum size allowed by our zoning laws and subdivision covenants. The wife crapped all over the location and said, "I don't like how it will it will obstruct the view of my backyard". I lost interest in the project ever since then.

It might well be worth it my friend.

The wife wanted to take the Lemans out last night to a local cruise to meet up with some of her high school friends. A couple was in town that now lives in Phoenix, so it was an excuse for her to chat old high school times. The kids and I were third wheels after awhile so we checked out the cars and trucks at the cruise.

Right away he spots a couple of 49-53 pickups. The powder blue was nice with Moon Eyes hub caps but for some reason choose to paint the run boards black. He had a great custom interior, removed the gas tank to the bed of the truck and had an old school Frenched power antenna.

The second truck was a deep candy apple red that turned out to be owned by a brother of a gentlemen I worked with 20 years ago (who was also there). So the kid got an earful of how to buy a truck, what to look for, how long it should take to restore, what he should start with, etc. Imagine, all this free advise, and it didn't come from me.

I certainly hope some of it sinks in.

Tell her yourself the next time we all get together. I don't mind holding the lit match while you pour on the gasoline.

I get an email this week from this guy I use to work with. He tells me there is a '51 Chevy pickup for sale near my old middle school in my old school district. I send the email to my wife and she thinks I need to take the kid to look at it. So I take the kid on a surprise drive Monday night. We find the truck and look at it. It's pretty complete. The tranny is screwed but it is all there, one re-spray in its 63 year life and there appears to be mostly surface rust. Someone has already fixed the rear lower corners of the cab in the past. and converted it to 12V but I don't like the way it looks to be honest - looks more like a hack job to get it running.

So we go through it thoroughly. Spend a good 30 minutes looking it over. Take photos, etc. Come home and show the wife. She asks how much - $5500. She asked how much would it cost to fix - I guessed somewhere between $15-20k. Were are we going to store and work on it? That's kind of important. Haven't gotten a clue since I don't have any garage space. She gets mad at me not coming up with a solution to that problem and for getting the kid's hopes up.

Sigh....I'm truly married....I definitely can't win. :stars:

Did you see the truck on Andersonville RD while leaving the Dustoff? Thought about it when I passed, forgot to ask you if you saw it?
