I actually went to school for Internet/Network Engineering, got kicked out for medical reasons, i wasn't allowed to go to class while on oxycotton or percaset after my surgery, so they removed me because of bad attendance, FORD BTI. its a joke, dont recommend anyone going there.

So now I'm either gonna go for business management or law enforcement.

nice! I made the mistake of going to ITT. they are full of crap! i learned everything i know from actually working in the field and studying for myself at home.

exactly, all my instructers were pretty biased on software and how things were done in order. They all teach you something different its bullshit. And one of them didnt know they're ass from a hole in the ground.

It is secured, the IBM knows that the router is there, it just won't connect. I suppose I could find the IP

here is the easiest way to solve your problem.

Hard wire your laptop to the router. Once connected, open the start menu at the bottom left of your computer. For XP, click on Run. Type in CMD and hit OK. Your PC"s command prompt will display. type in "ipconfig" into your command prompt and hit enter. You will see the IP address to your computer, the subnet mask, and the IP Gateway. Open a web browser and leave your command prompt open. Now in the address bar of the web browser, type in the IP Gateway. (eg. http://192.168.1.1 is usually default for Linksys). You should be able to access your router. If you have a password set, the password is defaulted to Username: admin, Password: admin.

Now once in the router, you should be able to search through it until you find the WEP Key configuration. I forgot the exact tabs you need to go to. I can get you the instructions but might take me a big since i need to switch out the router i have to the Linksys router and will lose interwebz. :P

Let me know if you need them so I can help guide you through.

haha. we got a teacher fired bcuz they hired him for Java I and he didn't even know how to code in Java. WTF?!?!?! :lol2:

Well hopefully you didn't confuse him too much :lol2:

But basically, what he said, it will give you all the information you need to really troubleshoot the problem

Thanks, will try that tonight/early tom

computer related question...i dont really know AMD processors. and what i want to know is, what AMD processors are equivelant to their competitors Intel?

computer related question...i dont really know AMD processors. and what i want to know is, what AMD processors are equivelant to their competitors Intel?

dunno how i missed this thread. In the army my job is IT specialist (25B) and in college my major is computer science focused on network technologies.

Basically the AMD vs Intel war has existed forever. with the exception of like 2 baby ass brands that you never hear of, AMD and intel are your two choices on earth for home cpu's. as far as tit for tat which model lines up with which other model its really not that simple. intel is always bragging up their FSB but in all reality, it isn't that big of a difference maker.

in the end, as far as high performance goes, intel has the latest technologies. they usually come out with new tech first such as dual core, quad core etc BUT, I LOVE AMD. I have ALWAYS run amd processors (with the exception of my pre-built laptop that I had to quick buy at a PX at an army base)

basically to compare you should just compart cache sizes, # of processors (dual quad etc), and your clock speed (IE 2.2ghz 2.4 ...) that is going to be mainly your differences.

as for which to buy, look at the price per-speed (like i said speed isn't everything and other tech play a part in this but IN GENERAL, if both are dual core, both have the same size caches and both are the same speed, itll be about the same) and AMD will 99.9999% of the time have a WAAAAAY cheaper processor than intel. The best bang for buck pc builds have AMD processors. the last computer i built (which was like a year ago) the price difference was absurd. The comparable AMD was literally like 120 dollars while the intel was something like 220.

Like i said, if you want super top of the line awesomesauce then by all means go for intel. If you want to save some coin and invest in a great processor that, maybe wont burn your eyebrows off because its so fast, but will be everything you will ever need, then get an AMD

two cents.

AMD and Intel are practically the same, really each is as reliable as the next. It's just preference really. I dunno if Crimson mentioned this in his book up there but Intel advertises... A LOT! so of course the price of their processor verse AMD is going to be more expensive. I'm an Intel guy though, the reason why is nothing towards the processor, I just like their Customer service and when I did work at Circuit City (forever ago), everyone I worked with boosted AMD and it got to a point where I could ask them a question about AMD and they wouldn't know the answer. They were just fans of AMD because it was the "cool" thing to do like Apple users...

Anyway, totally agree with Crimson though if you want to be cheaper (money wise) get AMD, otherwise for top of line get Intel. I've always trusted Intel, basically its at the point where unless they mega screw I'll always buy Intel, don't fix what's not broke right?

ok thanks. ill have to look at them carefully then. and whats the order of the AMD processors starting with with the best? and the computer that i wanted was an HP Touchsmart with the latest i-Core processors. but i also started looking at laptops and other desktops. quick question (only if you know), AMD Phenom II equal to...?

Ok. So i get a call from my mom who is freaking out. She says her icons have little arrows on them. At first i thought it was just sharing but it is not. Then I checked to see what programs are the default to open the Excel,PDF,word yadda yadda yadda and they ware all correct.

She says that it started when she imported some pictures from her camera. She said at first it was just a few icons, but now it has spread like the plague.

Anyone ever seen this?

First id run a virus scan to be on the safe side. I never seen this before but cameras do install their own software now to edit photos and upload to your computer, which I personally hate because windows does it better already. Anywho id check for any unwanted programs too.

Next do you have any new options when she right clicks the icon or does anything happen when its clicked that shouldnt

EDIT:

I know the problem now:

In Norton 360 backup there are icon overlays for the files that need to be backed up and have not yet been backed up. You can turn this feature off in Norton. It will take a reboot after you turn the feature off for your "normal" icons to return. Let me know if you need step-by-step instructions or if you figured it out.

Simple solution:

1. Open NAV 360

2. Click 'Settings'

3. Un check 'Back up system overlays'

4. Restart

Thanks!

Will pass it on.

I also just stumbled onto this thread i'm big into tech. I am almost done with my associates in IT with a focus on networking and plan to go on and get my bacholers in software engineering. My latest projects on my network were to convert an old Dell PC into an NAS with 2.5 terrabites of external storage, and set up an VPN using Gbridge so friends of mine could "borrow" music from my collection.

Nice! I've had an old server now for a while acting as a media server in my house, very handy especially now with all these devices being able to stream music and movies with ease.

Yeah thats kinda what i have in mind i'm workin on putting all my dvd movies on the external drive for streaming through my ps3.

New Egg is the bomb! I just downloaded their app a couple days ago. Its fairly easy to use too.

Use Firefox..... best browser IMO
