As a Flint native, I'm not sure how I feel about that term "Flint rebuild". We built bad ass Buicks and killer small block Chevys back in the day  What are you trying to say there Jeff?

We just call em Flintstones, but it's all good.

Yup same thing, when I lived in Saginaw there was a well known (to us at least) used car dealer on the north side of Flint that used to power wash and repaint engines and advertise them as "freshly Rebuilt"  I remember looking at a couple of GTO's on his lot and walking away after the test drive with blue smoke pouring out of a "freshly rebuilt engine" and him telling me it was just the break in oil burning off, it would clear up in a few hundred miles.

No offense intended, just a politically incorrect phrase from my misspent youth.

No worries man. I know the north end dealers you are talking about. Some of them were definitely shady AF. I had to give you crap for it though. You're good.

The dealer that I hated most in those days was on my side of town (the east side) - Superior Pontiac Cadillac. IF you didn't buy your car from them, they didn't want to service your Pontiac or Cadillac. They copped such an attitude.. I was happy the day they went out of business.

Funny you should mention Superior, we actually ordered our 99 Grand Prix GTX from them as they had a 2 door GTX on the lot that I wanted to see what the SLP modifications looked like. And my wife wanted a 4-door Supercharged version, not the 2 Door non supercharged 3800 that they had in stock. I had no issue with the salesman that we worked with, but the owner made it a PITA to deal with them. And I returned the favor when I found out they had to ship the car to the west side of Ann Arbor to a SLP modification center that was only about 15 miles from our house, opposed to the 55-60 miles the dealership was. I made them come to the modification center to complete the sale and picked up the car there. This was after the owner had insisted on a extra $1000 deposit because he didn't like the Interior color my wife chose a Tan Cloth with the bright red exterior paint.

The only Pictures I have of it on my HD with my Wife launching it at Milan Dragway with the Royal Pontiac Club. In the 2nd Picture you can just see it in the waterbox behind the Blackbird.

Speaking of Royal Pontiac, and the Woodward GTO Tigers, do either of these clubs still exist or are they active that you know of? It must have been somewhere in the 2010s when the Michigan Widetrackers, Royal GTO, Woodward GTO Tigers all met up at the Centerpoint Pkwy Marriot on Square Lake and Opdyke after the Woodward Dream Cruise one year. It was nice to meet like minded Ponti-yackers. Haven't heard from them ever since.

I've heard that both clubs are either defunct or inactive. GTOAA no longer lists the Woodward GTO Tigers. Royal Pontiac club was always independent.

It looks Like the car has the original Trans also! The PH tag decodes to 1971 Pontiac 455 4-bbl Police HD transmission.

A few shots of the engine on the stand prior to cleaning. The 5 blade flex fan still looks odd to me, but probably standard for a non A/C Catalina.

Unfortunately the Royal club disbanded around 2011. I don't know anything about the Woodward Tigers

We the engine looks better cleaned up and rattle canned. I will have to give them my spare new big canister fuel pump. The engine looks to good for the installed fuel pump. They are supposed to start on the engine bay this week.

So no serious engine rebuild or repair for this car? Justa rattle can rebuild?

No, the car only has 36k original miles on it, no oil leaks, and good compression on all 8 cylinders. I just didn't see a reason to pull the engine down. The transmission will probably need to be rebuilt as it is leaking out of every seal.

This is sooo frostys department :dancingpontiac:

This will be a project to decode. Dealer order sheets (and subsequent build sheets) varied somewhat between models and as Pontiac updated options and packages, the order forms could change (multiple times)  during any given model year. Some I can decode easily because it also ties back to the VIN and Data plate. Others require more research.

Cammerjeff - if you could, can you private message the VIN and firewall data plate information to me please? I want to compare that info to your build sheet. Thanks.

Thanks Frosty, I will PM you the VIN and a body tag picture soon.

on anouther site the dealer code matches with What I knew VT Angle and Sons Chambersburg PA

That's helpful info Jeff. I look forward to getting that info from you.

PM sent with the requested info. Thanks Frosty!

Information received Jeff, I will get on it.

Not much to report other than the shop has had the original fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump reproduced by inline tube, it has been replaced and they are supposed to reseal the transmission (leaking from just about anywhere it can) and reinstall the engine/Trans, and fuel tank this week. Then after bleeding and replaceing the brake fluid they are going to send it to a shop in Frankenmuth for the body and paint work.

I have spent the last few weeks trying to find out what the original door shield looked like. I have contacted the PD, so far no response, and the local Historical Society, and while they could not help with a picture of the car or door shield, they did come up with a picture of the Pontiac, Buick, Cadillac dealer is was sold thru, and judging from the vintage of the cars in the lot (1973-1976) I date the photo to 1975-76 near the end of the dealerships run in 1977.

That’s a neat bit of history Jeff! Thanks for sharing.

I do like the quality of Inline Tube. They made a custom parking brake cable for Lucy many years ago. I also have a set of fuel and brake tubes for her too, if I ever get around to replacing them. Every mechanic that looks at her says the lines on Lucy are fine. So I am in no hurry to replace them.

The resto shop recently pulled the seats to remove the ratty and somewhat moldy carpeting from the car, and as a Bonus they fount an old style Dealership Key Chain by the front seat rail, they cleaned it up a bit . No keys unfortunately so it was probably dropped during the dealer prep of the car. Looks unused to my eyes.

That's a huge find Jeff! I think there is some sort of Pontiac Dealer database on Facebook. Perhaps you can find this dealership there and find pictures of it. That would be neat to add to your car's storied portfolio,

Well 3 steps forward, and 1 big step back, engine and transmission back in, Transmission had all the external seals replaced, and filter changed, all new fuel lines installed, gas tank and exhaust system installed, rebuilt fuel sender works (most of the time) car fired up on fuel in the gas tank for the 1st time in 8 years, Brake fluid changed and brakes dissassembled, cleaned, and reassembled.

Then after letting the engine warm up the radiator started bypassing way to much fluid out the overflow. determined to be a head gasket, upon dissassembly the left head was found to be slightly warped. So it may or not be ready for the dream cruise, fingers crossed

Thanks for the concern, hopefully the shop will get it put back together this week, while the heads are off we are going to lap the valves and replace the valve seals. Hopefully this is the last mechanical curve ball the car throws at us! Fingers crossed!
