One of the first things I noticed was transmission fluid leaking. We continued to drive the car and monitor the fluid level. Once the car was shipped to Florida I was ready to work on it. The transmis

Well, I was dealing with a grinding noise as I put the car in park. It’s been like that since I bought it a few years ago. I was thinking I needed to rebuild the steering column or buy another one. Today I tracked the noise down to the neutral safety/backup light switch. Since no one has them available, I took it apart, cleaned, and greased it. It’s not perfect since the copper tabs are kinda dug out, but much better so I can be happy with it.

Finally found the source of the vacuum whistle. I went as far a replacing the carburetor. Turns out the gasket was torn, worn and bulged in spots. Apparently just enough to make it whistle with acceleration. I’ve been looking for the thick gasket but couldn’t find it. It actually is a cheap felpro easy to find if you know the product number. Another Bonneville problem solved!

Well, it’s Kinda like spring cleaning but more like spring fixing. Another little  annoyance checked of the list after an all day job. Long ago i purchase a new fuel sender. It would max out at half a tank reading. I suspected it was bent and not able to float to full extension. The only way to do it right was pull the tank and drain it, so i did. It is not easy to guess how much gas is in the tank with a car that gets 10mpg. We did run out a few times.

Getting under a tank with gas in it is not fun. After draining it i pressure washed the outside and inspected the inside. I cleaned up the mounting bolt threads so it will be easier if it ever needs to be dropped again. I used some wire to connect the sending unit with tank out of the way. It tested fine. Next,  I put sending Unit temporarily back in the tank and watched it move as I leaned the tank over. I could see it with a flashlight peeking through the fuel fill neck. As I suspected, it does not fully extend. I was able to bend the sending unit until it was correct. Problem solved!

Nothing is ever easy. I’m getting a slow drip from the sender. Looks like it may be coming through the screw hole. Once the gas level gets below it I will add a little round gasket around each screw. Kinda tight quarters in there to see and do anything. I can drop the tank after I burn 20 gallons

The dealer said buyer drove it about 6hrs home with no problems. No way I would drive that car this time of year on the frozen winter roads.
