I remember the Northstar V8 in the 2004 Bonneville being a real torque monster. This had a slightly tweaked fuel mapping and lower front diff ratio. but it was the FWD version of the Northstar, not the later RWD version that came in the XLR.

The Northstar had pep, just a poor coolant system design. Plus, they ate oil in old age/high mileage like it was their job. Whoever designed the timing chain retainers and hardware needed a bloody boot to the head, it was all put together with cheap plastics. Not to mention, that asinine starter placement.

Newer Northstars (+07 and up) were designed better, but I wouldn't trust them. My pops never had his 08 DTS long enough to see how they fared at high mileage.

The LS4 though is a completely different V8, though.
