PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — A 24-year-old man faces two charges after he used bear spray to fend off a man who was trying to mug him in the street Thursday, police say.

William Charles Cunningham was walking along Bethune St. at about 4:30 p.m. when another man allegedly tried to grab him and demanded cash.

Cunningham defended himself by spraying the robber in the face, police said.

Officers who responded to his call for help discovered he was carrying both the bear spray and a large folding knife, police said.

Cunningham is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a weapon. He is to appear in court Sept. 26.

Jacob Scott Collins, 26, is charged with robbery and breach of probation. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Take a wild guess which one will do more time ...

One would hope the sprayee would be sentenced to more time since he already has an established criminal past and is continuing to exhibit signs of habitual criminal behavior, however......

What the hell? He's charged for assault for fending off the suspect? wat

I am not versed in Canadian law, but I am willing to guess that carrying bear spray/pepper spray and a large folding (dare I presume to say "pocket") knife somehow is considered illegal in Ontario without some sort of concealed weapons permit. Personal protection is not a sufficient reason to being carrying these items, even if (for the sake of argument) both were considered non-lethal.

Pro - am I close?

I'm not sure myself .. and frankly, I'm the last person who's gonna call it in if I've just defended myself. But I know carrying anything 'with intent to use against a person' gets you silver bracelets. I carry several sharp pointy objects, but I make damn sure everyone around me sees me using them daily as tools. Carrying 'anti-dog' spray and using it against a mugger you might get away with ... carrying bear spray in an area without any bears ...

I have been warned once for having my work tool belt within reach of the driver's seat in my car. You can't have a hammer down the side of the driver's seat either ... although if you can convince the cop that your starter is wonky and needs a wallop every morning you might get away with a warning. Finding a particularly rigid snowbrush is a better option .. although they might question it in July.

In the news yesterday here about a kid that was arrested for walking the streets of B'ham with a loaded rifle. Got off over open carry law??. Then tried to sue over his RIGHTS. That was tossed as well. Don't understand the pepper spray (must be a border thing) But you better not carry a pocket knife here with a 4 in blade.

The 4 in knife is probably long enough in this state to require a concealed weapons permit. Carrying a gun out in the open is not a concealed weapon and not a crime. Does it make people pee their pants? Does it look suspicious? Yup, it sure does.

Bear spray contains mace. Mace is considered toxic. I am not certain about dog spray. For human protection, pepper spray is the spray of choice as it is non-lethal, and it has no long-lasting side effects and its non-toxic. Bear spray is not illegal to obtain, but it can only be used in areas where bears are present (so having it on the street is not a good idea). It is illegal in some national parks, but in other national parks were grizzlies are present, the use of bear spray is encouraged/required.

In Ontario you have the right to use reasonable force to defend yourself. This means in the court system is a knife for knife, gun for gun, fist for fist.

Ah, but there in lies the trap. They're not charging him with hurting the other guy ... they're charging him with carrying the means to hurt him.

Are they charging him with "carrying concealed weapons without a permit" ?

Nothing about concealment

They're firebombing his house, and he gets charged for firing at them.

A Welland, Ont., man is seeking a rarely issued permit to carry a handgun at all times, saying that police cannot protect him.

Ian Thomson's home was firebombed by four men in August 2010 and last week the ringleader of the firebombing, Randy Weaver, was released from prison.

"I cannot rely on police for any kind of protection," Thomson told Sun News' Byline program Monday.

Thomson, a former firearms instructor, was prosecuted after the firebombing for firing warning shots at his assailants. He was acquitted last January shortly after Weaver was sentenced to prison.

Thomson has also received threats from a neighbour who is seen on surveillance tape threatening to shoot him in the leg before yelling, "Come here. I'll blow your f---ing brain out."

What the fuck is wrong with Canada?

Two short sentences tells you a lot about our government:

We are told NOT to judge all Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics.

YET are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics.

?????????????????

Can't figure out ours, let alone across the boarder. Now our southern boarder, they know how to party and anything goes.

Wanna watch an anti-gun douche rage?

Ask them: "If guns are so terrible and evil...why are law enforcement agencies and the military allowed to have such tools of destruction?"

Most reply: "So they can protect us!"

Follow up with: "So why can't citizens protect themselves?"

Enjoy the rage, because I've never, ever gotten an answer to that question from an anti-gun douche. All they do is justify why guns are bad and should be taken away.

Taken away, O'rly? How about trying to stop the black market of firearms? Because these idiots don't seem to realize that those who have guns illegally don't CARE about laws they're breaking and WILL go out and kill people.

The only way to stop that? Get rid of free will in humans. Good luck trying to eliminate that factor.
