White Halloween? That's Just Wrong

Well we ended up having a white (e.g. snowy) Halloween yesterday. Nearly an inch of snow fell while I was driving home from work. The west side of the lower peninsula got almost 9 inches of snow. This is so wrong on so many levels.

As a kid I remember it snowed once on Halloween but nothing stuck, it melted on contact. It was just cold and we have to wear winter coats over our costumes.

As I left Lansing and headed east on I-69, the snow got worse.

It's almost freezing too....

Snow in my front lawn. Ugh. Only good thing is I didn't have to shovel this snow. I am soooo not ready for this yet.

So Frosty, being November is it too early for snow where you are? I must say that it is unusually cool here for this time of year - we still have a blanket on the bed which is unheard of so late in the year. I think I heard that the current El Nino means that seasonal changes occur later.

I also agree with Kiwi - Light My Fire is just such a good song. Remember when they performed on the Ed Sullivan show and he told them to not sing 'higher' due to the perceived drug reference? Of course, not only did Jim sing it but accentuated it! Good times.

We have a mixture of concreate and asphalt highways. Michigan has a lot of terrible roads because the state didn't invest to maintain the roads well enough in the last 3-4 decades. In fact our current governor originally campaigned "Fix the Damn Roads" slogan. It can't happen soon enough but the reality is both state and federal funding is not coming fast enough.

Asphalt roads generate serious pot holes thanks the freeze/thaw process. Concrete heaves and buckles too. But take longer to get real bad. However decades of neglect gets you there.

I don't know how much US fuel is excised at but if it's anything like the greedy Australian government, it'll be up to almost half. The billions they rake in do NOT go on road repairs. Instead, it ensures that the scumbags who are too lazy to go to work can sit around the house smoking cones, eating KFC and watching Dr Phill.

In some places, our national Highway 1 is a narrow goat track in need of constant repair and where trucks pass each other with inches to spare. I'll always remember driving across the US on interstate highways and marvelling at the amount of concrete they must have consumed.

I do enjoy driving cross country in the US, especially once I get into the mid-Atlantic and southern states, simply because their roads are in better shape. Either because of better highway maintenance or the freeze/thaw cycle doesn't take as big a toll on their roads as compared to the northern states, or both.

Somehow it just seems wrong to fly from a warm spring, going into summer, climate to a cold, wet, snowy climate, just because your boss wants to see a white Christmas. Personally I am ready for a Christmas with green, palm trees, and flip flop/T-shirt weather.
