Josh's G6 2009 2.4L

Recommended Posts

I'm finally starting this thread after what seems like forever of looking at ideas for the car. I have a 2009 base sedan G6 with the 2.4L I4 motor. I bought it in early 2010 with 9K miles on it. It has only had one other owner. The previous owner had done the window tint, but besides that the car was stock when I bought it.

Mods done by me. (For the sake of wholeness I will list out even the minor mods that I have done.)

License Plate Frame

Floor Mates

Tinted Tail Lights

HIDs 6K DDMTunning

Removed dealer stickers (Considering a partial debadge)

Locking Gas Cap

QuickLifts Post #72

Strut tower bar

Coilovers Post #108

Rims

Tires

K&N drop in

Intake silencer delete

MRZ UDP and lightened alt pulleys

Grounding kit

Painted Calipers

Intake pipe upgrade

LSJ TB

Bought but not installed or being shipped

Metra Unit (scammed)

1 Farad cap (scammed)

Future mods (Not all set in stone)

Exhaust

Audio

Perhaps some performance tweaks. (I'm not really looking to make the car fast, but perhaps faster)

Fog lights

Brembos

Tune

Any who I shall get some photos up soonish.

This is how it looked when I bought it.

Thank you Mark. I really need to find or take some decent photos of the car. I though I had some, but I cannot find them.

Here are some photos I found for a shoot I did for the car club I was in at the time.

I believe you can see one of the messed up hub caps in this photo.

Looks decent...

Debadge? I'd do a whole debadge, sooooo much cleaner.

IMO, those five spoke steelies look better without the covers.

As for exhaust, I recommend the setup I told Adam to use:

Keep the stock 2.25" pipping, replace the stock resonator with a glasspack, and a Dynomax crossflow muffler out back. His sounds great.

I'm thinking about removing the "Pontiac" lettering and then moving the "G6" to the right side. However I don't know how to stick the "G6" back on once I remove it.

As far as rims I'm torn between black rims and the Pontiac alloys. Also I can't seem to find anyone willing to touch the TPMS.

That is the exhaust I was planning. I looked at his thread and saw the video. That was the main draw of this site to me.

That's cool to know.

Re-apply the G6? Bah, badgeless is the way to go.

As for wheels, 5x100 is rather hard to find. Cobalt SS wheels (both the supercharged and turbocharged model 18"s) look really good on the G6, as does the 18" alloys from the Malibu LTZs (either a split spoke five spoke or a meaty five spoke, similar to the supercharged Cobalt SS's design) but I've really grown fond of the five spoke steelies GM has been using. They recently made the '09 and '10 model Impalas with the 17" five spoke steelies, looking into prices for those as a winter wheel for the Grand Am, since the W-body Impala is a 5x115 like my GA.

I've seen a handful of 5x110. My issue is I don't know what will work with the TPMS. Some people are saying that various wheels are incompatible with the sensor. Honestly I am hesitant to put down money without any solid answers.

Any wheel can be compatible with TPMS. Especially the newer rubber TPMS sensors GM has been using, since it pops in like an ordinary valve stem.

The regular solid valve type sensor sound still be compatible with most wheels however. It all depends on where the valve opening is located.

Sounds like a clean and simple mod list. The car looks good! And good luck finding some rims. Craigslist, eBay, tirerack, forums-- all good options for finding something!

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check into it some more. People were making it sound like a much bigger deal.

The previous owner only had it for 9,000 miles? That's surprising.

Nice pick up though, G6s seem to have a good aftermarket available.

The trophy wife that owned it before popped out her third kid, and three car seats do not fit across that back seat.

Thanks for the compliments Ringo & Valid.

I will be checking around for rims. Sadly TireRack can't get the sensors, so even if I buy them there I would have to get a local shop to mount the tires for me.

Most small tire shops DO NOT want to mess with the TPMS because of how expensive they are if they're broken, and/or they don't have the service kits to use when replacing the tires.

No, no, no...

There are a few small shops that are willing to mess with TPMS, you just gotta search around.

Mainstream stores, like Goodyear, Mavis, Firestone, Sears and STS will happily do it, but they tend to be more pricey than smaller shops, and have a nasty habit of adding fees for everything done. (Which is bullcrap because half the stuff they'll charge, the techs will never see in their commission pay and/or paycheck)

Ok thanks for the heads up Chaos.

Did I ever keep that a secret Phenom?

Well I just spent more money on my car. I got an Escort Passport 8500 X50. It was an impulse buy at a price that was hard to turn down.

Working on it. I leave before its light out and get back after dark. I'm out of the country next week, then is Christmas time. So how about after the new year with the HIDs in? Lol. Hopefully I can do it before then, but no guarantees.

Ok, I may have a chance tomorrow depending on how things pan out. I may also be going to a junkyard to get the final pieces for a 240 build a friend is doing.

Nice ride!

And about the TPMS... Chris is right, keep looking for a shop willing to do them... I just had this done... it is a PITA which is why no one wants to touch them.

The shop who did it for me didn't have the replacement kit, so I went to Autozone and bought a $10 set of hex keys and let them use them.

The easiest way to do them is to completely remove the tire off the rim (1 person can do this), but depending on the shop they might charge you for dismount AND remount on EACH tire....

Some shops like where I had mine done charge $5 to mount or dismount though so it's not to bad... I considered buying a portable tire changer fom Harbor Freight to do this on my own but it wasnt worth ALL the work I was gonna do... the shop had to dissmount 8 tires and mount 4... but only charged me $5 x 8 (4 dismounts and 4 mounts) plus another 20 to balance all 4 so $60 all together.

Good luck.
