I could imagine it being a bit tardy in tight spots. I put a standard manual box in mine and it's never going to be used in a fashion where I'll need extreme maneuverability.

Anyway, thanks for looking through your stuff. I might make an enquiry at a machine shop and prepare myself for the ensuing laughter.

OPGI has em for 53.00

Hey JustA, I had a look and what they are selling is called an add on pulley: in other words it bolts to the existing pulley to add the second groove - it doesn't appear to function as a standalone pulley. Anyway, that site led me down the rabbit hole and I uncovered all sorts of minor sites who deal in Pontiac engine parts, amongst other stuff. Some of the combinations of stuff for sale is bizarre - 'drop your panties' decals mixed in with a Camaro fuel guage for example.

Anyway, after I ordered 3 boxes of 'drop your panties' decals,  I found some pulleys at anywhere between $35 & $60, so I sent some emails off and will see if I get a response. If anyone visits Desert Valley Auto Parts, don't buy anything because they're a rip off - or perhaps they like gouging international customers who they know suffer a paucity of old US parts. I don't want to spread ill feeling toward particular businesses, but I'm pretty sure we all agree that $125 for a secondhand crank pulley is a little 'out there.' The funny thing is that if they'd been reasonable, they would have made a sale. How strange. The Aussies must have taught them that way of conducting business.

There was a bunch of listings.....Just hit the top couple of suppliers I recognize, to get ya started.

Breaking news: there was never a single groove crank pulley made for 1965 models. So every single car had at least power steering?

  • Author

It's funny: I have found a couple of single groove pulleys online that are apparently from a 65 model.

I'm not sure if 66 pulleys will interchange: 65-66 was a transitional period but you'd think the pulleys would remain the same. Does anyone have any info on this? Mind you, the crank pulley is way down there in the dark at the bottom of the engine bay. I reckon I'll get away with a single groove water pump pulley. There's a time & place to be pedantic, and I think I should move on. Surely, I have better things to think about.

The big cars had power steering as pretty much standard equipment in those days. Unless you were going racing, why would you want a manual steering gear box in the first place? So I suspect Pontiac just made a two groove pulley the standard pulley system for all engines going into the B-C body cars unless there was a special order.

That sounds entirely reasonable. I mean, what sort of unhinged froot loop would go from power to manual steering in a 2 ton land yacht?

Musta been one o dem Yella froot loops.  Red N Purple would never do such a thang.

A person would have to be totally mad to do such a silly arse thing!

My insanity has never been in question - I've been on this site for over a year now,  so you're all aware of what goes through my mind. Scarey stuff. It'll be worth it when I can pop the hood and look at that neat engine unencumbered by extra doodads & plumbing. I'm gonna make you all jealous!

"I not suffering from insanity. I'm enjoying every minute of it!"

All we can say is.....show us what ya' got!!!

i love frosty's .. things to ponder on the bottom of his posts.....

Freedom begins when you tell Mrs. Grundy to go fly a kite.

telling mrs grundy anything like go fly a kite, is basically a death wish, last time i told the boss anything close to that, i nearly had my balls stuffed down my own throat attached to a string that she could them pull out of my butt !💗

Check it out: back seat and trim finally in! It's at this point that I'd like to remind fellow lunatic restorers that when you start pulling a car apart, take notes & photos and put all those little nuts, bolts, screws, springs and other assorted paraphernalia into ziplock bags and label them. It's been almost 2 years since I had everything apart and boy, am I glad I took my time and documented everything. I should have both front seats in tomorrow.

The other pics are of the last engine I rebuilt and cleaned up the engine bay - 351 Cleveland stroked to 378, removed aircon & power steering (are you seeing a theme here?) and fitted a thermo fan.

To finish off, a coupla shots of my Cuba trip a few years ago - that's how they work on cars in Havana! The blue Fairlane was my cab back to the airport - repowered by Mitsubishi diesel drivetrain, which is unfortunate but necessary. I saw old 1940s cars with what looked like Russian tractor beam axle front ends welded in place of the original. Owning a car, any sort of car is a status symbol and because most of them are taxis,  a source of income. Oh, and if you look at the last photo, you'll see a Pontiac parked in amongst the others. It's the one behind the fat chick.

And I'm sure we can all relate to that last one, except that I skipped the clean, healthy living part.

Whenever I grunt & groan as I reach into that big engine bay trying to get at the distributor, I curse the engineer who suggested that they put it at the back of the engine. Then, let's really make it hard by requiring a screwdriver to unhook the cap. Oh look, now we need to unscrew the rotor! All of this makes a strong case for installing a transistorised 'pointless' system.

Whatcha waitin for?  Everyone else did, guess you missed the memo.😎

'Missed the memo.' Now there's a blast from the past,  a bit like 'dude,' but let me say that I still use both on a semi regular basis, because I'm old & crusty.

Anyway, let's move on: today I got some shit done. I installed both front buckets and their retractor seat belts. These are notes for anyone else who has got their reupholstered bucket seats back. The little chrome press fit retainers that ensure the seat back doesn't fall out of place require a good, hard shove. I placed the bucket on it's side, then with a folded thick rag, applied as much pressure as I dared, gradually increasing the intensity until it snapped into place - the retainer that is, not one of my vertebrae. They can be misleading: keep applying pressure until it really sits in place. Then it was time to pull apart the rusty innards of the seat belt buckle so as to enable the hapless passenger to tighten their belt as the horizon looms closer ever faster. I had to google the procedure, all you need is a screwdriver and the desire to send it's blade through your palm. Having been a previous victim of screwdriver attack many years ago, I evaded another injury this time. You need to pry up on the chrome piece adjacent to the buckle and slide it back - more difficult than it sounds. Anyway, I cleaned up the rust and now it adjusts like it should.

I also attached my newly upholstered front armrest pads to their bases. They are now better than factory, because they're stitched. The final unpleasant job was to undo the dashpad upholstery and remove some of the padding, to enable the pad to sit on the dash the way it's supposed to. It took several goes but I got there in the end. Just waiting for the adhesive to set now, and hopefully I can chuck it back in the car. When my new front door panels turn up, I think that's gonna be it for the interior.

Oh, and I picked up a cheap spray gun set for $80! It includes 2 one litre gravity feed guns, one touch up gun and a regulator. Even if it only lasts for a couple of jobs, it'll do.

After another 11 days of overtime infused work, I am back home for 3 days then back to work. I am currently undoing various bits of the engine in preparation for it's imminent removal. Today, apart from other stuff I needed to remove the oil filter because it won't clear the headers as the engine slides forward. Picture this: the ONLY way I had any hope of removing that filter was to balance myself on my stomach on the front guard with my feet braced against one of the carport posts with my head in the engine bay whilst trying to unscrew the brand new unused oil filter (Golden Rule: always tighten by hand only) from above. I have no less than 3 oil filter removal tools and the last one finally, reluctantly got a grip and worked. I then removed the adapter and will definitely do what Kiwi did and fit an extended adapter.

In other news, I got my shit together and created an additional bank account labelled Stroker Fund and chucked a hundred bucks in. It's going to happen.
