Thanks Wrongway.

I am going to try my hand at faux-tina, or fake patina, in the near future.

On the wifes ride????  And that's how the fight started.......

Both .......

The faux-tina, but we will stay tuned in for the aftermath also, justa in case you need our support ol buddy.

I see a new Frosty in the future! Faux Frosty! But I would think the gear shift lever may be a little painful on insertion!

That sounds painful Last Indian! Damn!

I worked on Lucy again today. I fought the good fight, I got the wires repaired and the old starter with the new solenoid, re-installed. I reconnected the battery and turned the key, it tried to start! I turned it off quickly though. I still want examine the starter switch first. Things are sounding promising though.

My enthusiasm was short lived today. I jumped in Lucy and she did another no start no sound on me! Grrrr!

I pulled the steering wheel off, dropped the column to look at the push rod and ignition switch. I unmounted the ignition switch from the column.

I then used another Rod to push the ignition switch back and forth with the key on, nothing. I swapped in the old original ignition switch and nothing. So I am stumped. Clearly there is ground problem somewhere in the system, but where to look next?

im going to study service manual for awhile to get some ideas of where to look next.

Start at the battery frosty

stick a jumper cable from the battery earth to the motor

have you tested the slide switch for power from the battery ?

Kiwi, can’t say as I ever have.

i was going to look at the neutral safety switch next. I really hate playing the power or ground pin probe game with a volt meter. However, it’s clearly necessary at this point.

i dont blame you Frosty, it can be mind bloggling !

i do this stuff for work so i am used to it,

my advice

take your time , its justA process of elimination

your in your super flash workshop so... cold drink, turn up the sounds and enjoy !

understanding what you want to see BEFORE you test .

a good example is while you have the acesss to that ignition slide switch, big fat red wire.... is there 12 volts ? if yes move to next , purple wire to start, power when you slide to the start postion ...yes ... no ?  I use a multi tester , but a good old test light does the same trick,

i have gone through 2 of these slide/igintion  switches on my 72 camaro, i dont know why... poor qulaity, ??? but i do know they can be your weak link !

good idea checking the shift inhibitor switch for continuity too 👍

thats my 2 cents :dancingpontiac:

is your steering column backdrive in tact? rotate the column to the left..

I will have to check Joe.

Lucy was loaded onto a flat bed today and sent to an electrical repair shop. Hopefully we will get to the bottom of the no start problem shortly

Well, I got an interesting phone call from the repair shop this morning. They found the problem. It seems my wiring is partially melted deep under the dash, between the ignition wiring and the fuse block. It's going to cost about $400 to replace the damaged wiring. I asked if it was better to replace the entire wiring harness and he said it was better to repair only what was damaged. The rest of the wiring harness looks good under the dash - even though it's 50 years old.

I asked him what he thought happened. He said it clearly got overheated, either by power feedback or improper grounding.

Well this is not the outcome I was expecting. I certainly didn't see that one coming at all. He said he thinks he'll have it fixed by today or tomorrow. Okay I'm impressed with these guys.

lets hope they also find the root cause as well. do they suspect the new steering column?

I agree Joe. No idea yet. One of the questions I’ll have for them when I go to pick it up.

Yeah that was what I was thinking too Joe !

it’s the only thing frosty has changed

the melted circuit must give a clue as to where to look for load or earthing issues

Just picked up Lucy from the repair shop. Here is the burnt wire! He thinks this is from old age/deterioration.

He does not believe the column had anything to do with it. The new ignition switch and neutral safety switches are fine. The rest of the harness is in really great shape, especially for being 50 years old!

He has no concerns at this point that this will happen again. Fingers crossed because this could have been much more serious obviously.

They are part of the starter circuit, it’s between the neutral safety switch and the fuse block, heading for the starter.

I spent this evening washing, vacuuming, and cleaning Lucy inside and out! She’s pretty dirty from getting towed in the rain and sitting while I and the electrician worked on the car. I also had to put the interior back together. I’m off to the Troy Traffic Jam car show in the morning. They’re going to have Pontiac speakers and a tribute to 60th anniversary of the GTO.

Lucy at the car wash tonight!

Sorry I didn't go.  How did Lucy do?  Instead I was working on trimming my hedges and cut the top off a hornets nest.  Resulted in many stings from my face to my arms.  Swollen and looks like I was in a bar fight.

We want photos that you got beat by a Hornet!  You know how we like pics around here!

Car show was good in Troy today. Lucy ran well, but I think the timing is off a little. I need to put her under the timing gun to be sure. She seemed to run a little hot on the drive home, so I need to double check the coolant level too. All in all, Lucy was back!
