Running a car club? Fustrating...

Featured Replies

Alright, as most of you know, I'm apart of a growing local car club, Unknown Motorsports. Taken over by Sal Sr, myself and a lot of people joined from other clubs, and the last club Sal Jr was apart of, New Image. I've been with them for two months, and Unknown has been around for 4 months. The last month and a half, the club has been very disorganized, and it's turned into more of a hangout than a real car club.

Problems:

- Certain people "in charge" needed to go, they contributed little or nothing

- Drama. It seemed to veer it's ugly head every chance with certain members

- Club priority: some members joining as of late don't take the club seriously, and rock the name just the have another decal on their ride.

During the cruise to Montauk on Sunday, myself and three other Unknown members, we had a pow-wow. We loved being apart of Unknown, but we're sick of the drama, and the lack of leadership and organization. We didn't want to leave the club, instead, branch out. The formation of Unknown Motorsports East was made, and later that day, Sr's approval was made. This was kept on the DL until tonight, where somebody leaked this onto the main Unknown page on FB. A shitstorm soon followed. I said my piece, but people got pissed, and rage quit the club.

Here's the topic on Unknown's page where it went down. I was the first to step in for the defense of Unknown East, and it gets ugly from there:

Can't see the wall without joining.

Arg...that's a lot of crap to copy and paste...

I'll figure out how to bring the convo here later.

i been runnin a car club for about 10 years.

i find if its not drama between members its between other local car clubs.. when your small and just startin out they shit on you. when your all big and have 30-40 cars at your meets they still shit on you. and if its not clubs and members its the police trying to wonder what the hell all these people are doing and why no ones turn signals are amber ... hmmm

we changed the name of our club from nbbadtoys (i know its was a crap name i didnt come up with it) to mostwanted motorsports.

new name less BS so far.

the problem often is people come up with what they think are fantastic ideas. but rather are crap ideas. you tell them this in a nice way. and they cry thinking that selling a calender for $20 starting in july to dec is a fantastic idea. or selling fuzzy dice with club name on it but have to buy a min of 500 that its a geat idea at $5 Ech . but dont have even $10 to front to the idea ...

and having posted this im sure ill be inboxed with in a few hours from people being pissed.. its lose lose i tells ya.

The issue with Unknown, is the lack of organization, and the people in charge have no leadership skills.

Many things were supposed to be done. Member dues, business propositions (IE organizing charity events, and hosting shows to raise money and sell merchandise) and fleshing out the club as a legitimate organization. But the current "leaders" are more concerned with their own positions of power, and keeping the club as some sort of hangout.

I've been involved with the LI car club scene for three years now. And every single club I was with failed miserably. Why? Nobody put forth real effort to make the club legitimate, and/or people easily lost interest and stopped supporting the club's real purpose, and made the reputation of the club as a "hangout".

LITuners

Avant Garde Autosports

Team631

These used to be fairly big clubs, and they all died off. Sadly, if things with Unknown keep the way they're going, they'll be added to the list.

I'm having a meet with members of Unknown East, and others from the main club to discuss the future of Unknown. If the troublemakers don't want to compromise, and see this as a "disgrace" as they're calling it, and only cause more shit, I'm done with the LI car club scene, and just go solo.

We used have 3 car clubs around here. One is disbanded now, one is classics only, and the other is pure rice.

Jesus christ...

Moar shit has hit the fan. Further drama has ensued, perpetuated by one person, and now everything is blown completely out of proportion. Everyone is at each other's throats. And I'm done.

Seriously, this is really depressing for me. My buddy Sal started this club before he passed away, and now it's come to this. I'm scraping my windshield banner off tomorrow, and keeping away from the meet scene for the next month or two.

There's a few of my friends starting up a fresh crew in the ashes of this mess, and there's another crew, Prodigy Motorsports, a few of my friends are apart of, and they've been amazingly successful, no drama, organization is there, and it feels like a team, not some rag-tag group of people wanting a hang out spot. But time will tell.

On the flipside, my g/f Lisa will have a lot more attention from me now. :D seriously, it's times like this I'm so grateful for her, my family and my close friends.

Whenever you have a group of people together you will always need strong leadership to keep it together, no matter what you're doing. If its not there, things will fall apart end of story, nothing you can do sadly.

There's not many clubs down here and the few that are I refuse to join because of this.

Part of being in a leadership position is knowing when to say no and when to say yes. When you say "no" though it can be hard so what you want to do is not say "no" out right but make the person think about what they are wanting to get done (that may be stupid) and usually they will back off if you keep making them think of it lol. Then of course controlling a group, pertaining to rules and of course know what you're doing lol.

This will usually lead to a good group experience if not sometimes you can blame your members but that's like 2% of the time.

I've had a lot of experiences with leadership in groups offline and online and there's a lot I've picked up to get everything where it is today. You really have to try hard to even make the littlest of things work with a group because you never know what will take.

Wonderful.

Right now I wait a parking lot away from all hell breaking loose. My friend Jess (she sided with the idea of Unknown East) and she rolled into their meet tonight alone. Not even five minutes, and the antagonizers are talking shit. Trying to keep my friends calm on this rainy night is turning out to be tiresome.

Ugh. I hate this god forsaken island.

It's times like these I'm thankful for my small car club! We are a 'club' in the essence that we get together once a month to hang out, talk cars and just do something together. We have one big car show a year. We're people from Wisconsin that love cars and are on a budget so we do everything inexpensively and it makes us happy. And we all get along! (There are a couple gems, but luckily they don't make it out often. In the history of the club we only ever had to kick one person out, and that was for threatening another member's life. Ridiculous.) They are honestly some of my best friends and I wouldn't trade them for anything. They're the most dependable people I know.

I wish you could know the same joy that I know, with your club. Maybe out of all this madness you will be able to create something fun in honor of your friend. I hope that is what will happen. I hate people that cause drama and ruin a good thing.

Good luck :\ If only people weren't so catty and dramatic!

Thanks! Honestly, it's Long Island. It's the mindset instilled in 95% of the people around my age. Nothing works, everybody gets selfish and power hungry. :/

I still have my close friends out of all this, and Late Nite Crew, to which I'm meeting up with them tonight. LNC is more of what your club is, except no shows.

I left a previous team I belonged too, got tired of the BS, created my own team, now it's just a family team, considering the four other members I had dropped out due to economical reasons or not wanting to follow the rules set forth. You can check it out at CLICKY HERE All the rules are posted, and I think you might like them :D Feel free to use them as a basis for future or current teams...
