These were all real many years ago.  Most have probably seen these, but betting Kiwi and others have not.   ENJOY

These are actual billboards in Detroit, Michigan put up by GM. This is definitely cool!

I've written about this famous 1968 Pontiac GTO / Woodward Ave ad before. It was also turned into a billboard ad over Woodward Ave near Birmingham, where this photo/airbrished ad was taken.

The billboard read "To Woodward. From Pontiac. With Love".

This ad so infurated the Birmingham city council that they wrote a scathing letter to the GM Board of Directors, cut down the trees and removed this turnaround within the city limits.

Let me give you a little history lesson Kiwi. This also pissed off the GM execs once they got the letter. This ad and the billboards were pulled immediately after this.

First of all, this is 1968. Woodward Ave was the king of illegal street racing in the United States in the sixites (due, in part,  to its proximity the auto factorys using it as a mini-test track as well as regular guys buying and tweaking their own cars), followed by Van Nuys Blvd in California. Second, GM's ban on legal and illegal racing was in place, starting in early in 1963. Therefore GM didn't want to be associated with or shown to be encouraging any sort illegal street racing. Third, GM's marketing edicts of the day, particularly with muscle cars, had to show the car in such way as it being stationary, and not doing anything illegal. Technically this ad complies with that edict.

However, the car is clearly on Woodward Ave., making a legal U-turn, stopped, waiting to complete the turn. However, reading between the lines, everyone knows this car is looking for street race because it's on WOODWARD - King of the Street Races for cripes sake! The Birmingham city council felt Pontiac was encouraging illegal street racing - in their town - with this billboard ad (and to some extent - they were). GM execs agreed that this was not in the best interest of the corporation and the common good and pulled the magazine and billboard ads altogether. This ad appeared in only one magazine and the billboard lasted less than a month. Still it has become rather famous just the same. Pontiac got their proverbal hand slapped for it.

Oh wow!! priceless mate:stars::dancingpontiac:

That now, is a piece of history:dancingpontiac:

super cool 👍

Clearly their was no petrol heads on the Birmingham city council  back in the late sixties, which in its self is sad.🙄

i hope the locals voted more like minded people onto that council in future years !

Because now.... having a car event in your area is a major cash cow for local business... ie councils love hot rodders and their events now = cash flow !!

Legal street drags, they where and are the best draw cards for bringing punters into your town !

Now every third Saturday in August, Woodward is automotive valhalla! Every city along Woodward, from Pontiac (north end) to Ferndale (south end) loves the Woodward Dream Cruise - even Birmingham. However, my own experience with Birmingham is with their parking fees. I use to park in front of Rose Lawn Cemetary, near 12 mile, near the Shring of the Little Flower Catholic Church. The city was charging us $175 a car over 10 years ago. What a rip off! Parking in Pontiac with the Widetrackers is $35. One could argue its location, location, location - but I won't.

To your point, there were no petrol heads on the city council back in the sixties. Today, maybe, but there are clear money hungry opportunists at $175 a pop.

As for street legal drags, Roadkill Nights Presented by Dodge sponsors racing on Woodward too. It's usually the weekend before the Dream Cruise. A Top Fuel dragster doing a burn out on Woodward in front of the M1 Concourse in Pontiac is awesome thing to see!
