These were a very unique filter from an OEM. Europe if I remember right.

What does the term "e-core" stand for? I understand that they are the cartridge filters like the one in my 2011 Equinox? Are they as effective as spin-on filters? The Fram Ultra and STP Extended Life filters seem well made.

I have heard that SuperTech filters are now made by WIX. Very good looking filters now days.

The E in encore stands for environmental. The filter assembly of filter media is glued to a engineered plastic structure. This design came from Europe. There was a big push in Europe to incinerate oil filters as opposed to dumping in a landfill like the US. That said as a spin-on the point is mute as the ecore is encased in a steel can! 

Still these are actually a well made filter, as I worked with quite a few OEM from Europe when these were coming to be. The new style GM filters like PH48e for instance is an ecore filter.
