heavy trunk safety tip

Recommended Posts

So since having a 1970 GTO with the Judge spoiler I have always worried when displaying the car at a car show with the trunk lid open that the wind picking up could slam the trunk or a passerby could unknowingly bump the trunk to close hard and possibly damage the spoiler. So I came up with a simple, cheap solution that could prevent this from happening so I am sharing the idea here. I am posting pics to give you a visual. Hope someone else gets some use out of this.

This hole is on both side of the trunk support and just under the trunk hinges when the trunk is open.

I found at the local hardware store for $14.99 a 4 foot hollow steel bar 1/2" OD that I hit with a spray can of paint and the added a few inches of heatshrink to each end.

Insert the end of rod into each of the holes below the hinge as shown.

Most showgoers will be hardpressed to even notice the safety rod when it is in place. Most will think it is part of the car.

With the heat shrink in place, and the weight of the trunk on the safety rod, it will be hard pressed to shift out of place. It's really cheap insurance IMO.
