1955 Star Chief Custom Seat Covers

Featured Replies

I am looking for factory installed seat covers for 1955 Pontiac called Nycar. They came in two colors, Firegold and Turquoise Blue, to match the interior of the 1955 Star Chief Custom. Any idea where to find these ?

Hi whayne, welcome to FP.

I suspect this is a long discontinued material or fabric. You might have to go to an automotive upholstery shop to get some custom seats made. This appears to be some sort distressed leather or vinyl with a special insert. If your Safari has this type of material, it can be used as a pattern to create the new seats.

I know from experience that lots of materials get discontinued over time, while other remain available. I have a set of two-tone Recaro seats in my '86 Trans Am. I know from working with my local upholsterer that the material is still available but no one makes replacement seat covers for these Recard seats. I would encourage you to visit an upholstery shop with a sample of your seats to see what can be done to re-create a set of seats as close as possible to your originals. It's possible that another material very close to NYCAR exists or perhaps it is called something else now. An upholsterer is a good source to talk to. I know this may not be the answer you want but it is most likely your only solution.

Thanks for the info, my family's textile mills here in North Carolina made the Nycar seat covers for Pontiac in 1955.  We also wove all the upholstery and door panel fabrics for the 1956 Desoto for Chrysler. Trying to find an original Nycar to put in our hometown's textile museum. Thanks for your reply

Ah, now for that you have to keep an eye to the various auction houses and eBay. A lot of original / unrestored / restored car collections get sold thru the likes of eBay, Barrett-Jackson, Mecum, RM, Sotherbys, and the like. Fortunately, most of them have websites that you can review the upcoming lots to see if it is a car you are interested in bidding on. Since Safari's are rarer than Nomads, they won't sell for low money.
