Fuel gauge FReady wrong

Question

pontiacfriend

HEy all i am new to the forum. I have a tech question My G6 died yesterday. looks like the Fuel gauge is not reading right and the car ran out of gas. Added gas and the car seems to be running fine other then the gauge reads wrong. The mech i took it to says i need a new pump($550) put the car runs???? So I was thinking the Fuel Level Sensor??? I seen a lot of stuff on the web about the sending unit but some say it hasn't fixed their problem!! any ideas.

It's either your fuel pump assembly, or the connector to the gauge. I replaced the whole pump on my wife's car. Autozone sells them for around $300ish. Hope that helps!

i'm not sure if you can replace just the sender/level gauge on the G6's or not. good idea to look into though, as it's much chaper than a whole pump assembly. although you have to drop the whole tank still anyway. i'd start by getting under the car and see if you can see and electrcal connectors for the pump/sender. if so, pop them off and see if they're corroded or anything. it's the cheapest place to start.

Unfortunately it all has to come as one unit :(

Any further info would better be searched on G6P, but I do believe G0VTCH33ZE is correct

my gf's did this a while back but this issue was paired with a bad fuel cap. When the fuel cap was replaced and the CEL was cleared then the gas gauge started working correctly. im sure if a tech told you that they are probably right but for kicks you should inspect your gas cap because apparently when that vacuum isn't correct it throws the gauge off

I totally forgot about the gas cap, one of the most minor things that could throw the system for a complete loop
