Remembrance Day/Veterans Day

Featured Replies

I was watching TV and the numbers of WW1 and WW2 veteran numbers are dwindling. One of the things that I have learned is that some of the best life stories come from these men or women. I will be going to the services here in Sarnia but not in uniform as it will not fit anymore (uniform is to big) and I did not go to the taylor in time.

I hope all of the servicemen and servicewomen here have a good day and stay safe.

Thank you, I know that the best stories do come from that era. My Grandfather, who recently passed away, had some of the best stories from when he was a Pilot in the Navy during WWII.

He is most of the reason that I joined the Marine Corps. I hope to some day have the same type of stories that I can tell my kids ad grand-kids in the future to give them something to remember and to pass on to their kids.

:agreed:

Both my grandfathers were in with WW2 but my dad's dad died before I was born so I never heard his stories (he was in the army though) but the ones from my moms dad from when he was on a PT boat in the Navy and going all around the world were awesome.

Probably my favorite time to study history is WW2 era.

Yeah. Both my grandfathers fought in the war. My dad's dad fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the 82nd and 501st. My mom's dad fought in the Pacific theater as a navigator for a PBY Catalina patrol plane.

My dad's dad never talked about the war. He always had a glassy, cold, look in his eyes when anything about the war came up. There was 2 stories that he did think were funny.

A captured German officer gave him a pair of binoculars that we still have to this day. My grandpa talked about how he always talked to the captured Germans. It taught me a lesson that during war, nobody wins. Everyone wanted to just do their job and go back home to their families.

Another one was an RAF pilot bailed out and ran from my grandpa's squad because he thought they were Germans. haha.

I miss them both, and I plan to visit both of their graves.

My mom's father was in Pearl Harbor. He was an electrical engineer on the Vestal, a service ship that was attached to the Arizona when it was hit. The Vestal managed to unattach and then beached itself on a shoal to prevent sinking. My grandfather died almost six years ago.

My dad's father was in the Navy as well but he was a mechanical engineer on a ship that never saw battle, and neither did he. He did travel across the Pacific on it however and saw Japan and a few other countries. He's still alive. (Tom Goad, former Manager of Special Vehicles for Pontiac. Man does he have some stories!)
