car alphabet soup

Car alphabet soup who hates it? Myself for one I hate it with a passion!!!! I miss the Gand ams, the Eldorado, the Monte Carlos and so on. I just think naming a car makes it so memorable and keeping the name and its basic characteristics. A monty always had the quarter window and the rectangular tail with a corner cuto out. thes Mkz, sc400, s300 and on and on are just so hard to remember and just so lifeless. Ok some are good like 442, some of the BMW ones but if I say mercedes s300 does that mean anything to you or memorable or is Regal mustang, camaro, gran maque or challenger mean something to you. I just hate this abc and 123 car shit to no end. andyone with me. Bring back the names even if there new ones!

thanks Ford, chevy, Buick and Dodge for the names and not giving it to the trend of the last 10 years. One of the biggest bummers is when Caddy killed there names. I so think the new CTS coup so should of been called the Eldorado. DTS, CTS ect can gop to hell as far as the names and DeVille, SaVille ,Eldorado & Brome just speak to me. I love my G6 but what the F is a G&6 lol I know I know some and myself also say it means 6th gen grand am but I just lol at that.

end/rant lol

Blame competition. Mainly because of the Germans and their popularity. Caddy wants to beat them in their own game, even in branding. And guess what? It's working.

Definitely 100% agree! The only BMW's that I can keep straight are M3 and M5's, I couldn't tell you what a Merc or Audi looked like if you just gave me the number (apart from an R8).

Although I like CTS because it just flows, I would have preferred something with a name. Problem is Caddy's are now trying to appeal to the younger generation (like Buick) and I don't think this generation would buy a CTS if it was called an Eldorado sadly.

G6 isn't as bad as 528i or something but there's that younger generation thing again, trying to be hip!

What most don't realize about Mercedes and BMW...the idea behind the numbers and letters...you have the model as the first number or letter, and it's engine (in liters) after it.

BMW: 528i - 5 (series model) 28 (2.8 liter engine)

Mercedes: S430 - S (series model) 430 (4.3 liter engine)

That's basically how they come up with their model names. As for Caddy, the idea behind the "letter" names actually came from model trim names.

Remember the DeVille DTS? Seville STS? That's where it came from, then for the CTS, Caddy decided on CTS as the actual model name for the Opel based Catera replacement. Which the 2.8L and 3.2L found in the CTS where derived from Opel. That's why there was an option for a manual for the CTS, the Opel model was popular with the manuals.

It took me a long time to figure this out about BMW model naming. I'm finally beginning to understand it and be able to look at one and say "Oh, that's a 325i" etc.

I like car names better unless they make some sort of sense. I thought the G names for Pontiac made sense to a degree, especially if you knew Pontiac history and for instance that the G6 was a sixth generation Grand Am. I however think Pontiac had such success with their names that it confused people when they changed to the numbering system.
