Hood insulation 68 GTO 69-70-etc.

Featured Replies

What is the general opinion on hood insulation? I live in Florida, cooling is always a concern. My concern is the look, it covers most all of the inside of the hood, unlike Chevelle’s, Camaros, etc. where you insert between the structure. Once you spray the sticky stuff, it’s a done deal. Thoughts?

Its personal thing Thom, i for one like a clean under hood, and not so worried about extra sound from the motor driving

I also like the clean, non-insulation look myself. However, I've owned my '72 Lemans Sport convertible with a 455 for over 30 years now. The previous owner painted the under side of the hood body color (Lucerne Blue), not underhood/chassis black. There is no under hood insulation. Now, 30 years later, that paint is blistering off because of the long term engine heat. I am going to have to re-paint the underside of the hood as a result. I plan to install the hood insulation once the new paint is set. Since I like a clean engine bay, I plan to paint the Pontiac arrowhead or some other logo/art work into the insulation for a novel look.

My caution is this - short term (several years in fact) no insulation is fine. Long term will eventually contribute to blistering the paint off without the insulations' protection. Your call - but understand the ramifications.

I have the stuff to do it with, might as well protect it. The underside is painted to match the car and looks great. I can see I baking away in the future though. Thank you for the input. I really appreciate this group. You guys are always helpful.
