Gas Gauge Question

Featured Replies

Hi, I have 1954 Pontiac Star Chief the gas gauge when off is just below empty, turn the key on and it go's to empty.  I grounded the wire and I get the same thing.  When I leave the wire disconnected and not grounded  and then turn the key on, the gauge go's to full!!    Any Ideas ?

Thanks for any info

hi mike, are you talking about the wire to the sender unit ? and your testing at the tank end of the wire ?

if so, when you ground it you should be getting full on your gauge ?

disconnected it should be below the empty line,

Yes the wire going to the sender.  Disconnect  the wire and it reads full.  If you ground that wire it read empty when it should read full like you said.  I have never run into to this before.

Well I removed the gauge and tested it, it seems to be shorting out no matter where I put the test leads it makes  continuity.  I sent the gauge out for repair. I will let you know what they said. Thanks
