Odometer not reading anymore. Need help!

Featured Replies

As of driving to school this morning, the odometer stopped counting the mileage, it's stuck at 176991 and 3/10ths. The trip mileage won't count either. It was working fine all day yesterday but this morning it just got stuck. How can I fix this? I really need a response ASAP.

I also forgot to mention it's my 1987 Firebird. I can't look at anything right now because I'm in school. The odometer is mechanical it doesn't have the computer screen with digital numbers like on newer cars. The trip mileage and odometer doesn't work as of this morning it was working completely fine yesterday but now it's not counting anymore. Some help would be great, thanks

Lord be praised! I got out of school and the odometer started ticking away again :) So relieved. My guess was it was just a little chilly out this morning and it needed a break for a bit lol.

Update: it seems like it doesn't work in the morning until I'm about half a mile from school, then it starts moving again. My guess is that it could be a bad cable or something not the gears that turn the dial. The engine light is on too so that might be a reason why, I'll have to have my auto tech shop at school look into it. If anyone has any ideas about the odometer please let me know.

I hate to break the news to you, but the speedometer and odometer are electrically driven off the ECU. The odometer numbers are turned by a small "stepper motor" behind the gauge face. I suspect the electrical connection is weak or the stepper motor may need replacing. This will mean removing the entire instrument cluster and then removing the gauge to test the stepper motor itself.

Ok, I'll have to see how it acts after school and have my mechanic check it out this weekend. Like I said it started working when I pulled into school, I drove around the parking lot to make sure it still was ticking and it is. It also functioned completely fine after school and the rest of the day yesterday. I suspect it primarily could be a weak connection rather than the motor because if the motor wasn't functional it wouldn't turn the numbers at all.

Try reaching up under the dash and make sure the two electrical connections to the cluster are pushed in and they are firm and tight.

I found my solution: letting the car warm up in the morning. I figured if I let the car warm up for 10 minutes it would work and sure enough, the odometer is working perfectly fine :D I forgot to mention that i kept my Firebird in an unheated garage all winter so it just needs to get used to being driven, but I will remember what you said frosty! Thanks!

Glad to know you've got something that works.
