Distributor identification

Featured Replies

69 lemans 400ci eng. The owner before me had an HEI distributor on this engine.  Im having a hard time identifying the distributor.  Numbers are 6G13 which i believe is 1976 july 13th. The seven digit is 1103272.  What info i can find on that 7digit is for a 78' 301ci eng but im not sure. I cant tell if its a cardone or what, no other markings. Can any Pontiaddict out there help, thanx in advance.

Wallace Racing has what you need for stock distributor identification.

Here is what they came up with. It is definitely from a 301 Pontiac....so July 13, 1976 would make it mostly like a part that could go into a '77 model year car. These distributors were essentially used in all 301s with automatic transmissions regardless of platform.

So IMO this is a stock DELCO distributor. Clearly your '69 400 (assuming the 400 is original) did not come with an HEI distributor.

Correct Frosty, it did Not, and yes it is the original 400 in it.  With no other markings on this dist, i had no idea if it was a cardone or delco or what. Thx for the reply. Im bored 30 over on the rebuild, and will def be gettin a new Distributor  just not sure which one yet. Thanks again Sir'

You are most welcome sir. Let us know how your engine rebuild goes and what you choose to go with and why (cost, performance, reliability, etc.).

My 455 is running the stock non-HEI Delco distributor with a Pertronix Igniter II breakerless kit in it (you can only get the Igniter III now). However, if you plan to do so some quarter mile, a hi-perf distributor like MSD or Holley is probably warranted.
