New Cats installed and passengers side gets red hot

Featured Replies

Hi All

I hope someone out there can help me. I installed new 2 1/2 inch exhaust from the exhaust manifold to the the tailpipes. all new SS pipes with cross over and cats and  magna flow mufflers.

Car starts runs for a while then the one side of the cat gets beat red. car runs rough after wards. does anyone know what I have done wrong.

was told that the new cats are wrong. the old cat was the large cat that looked like a parge pizza. was told that the new cat is a one way flow and the old cat was a 3 or multi flow cat that can take the unburnt gas from the engine.

Any advise

Thanks Mike

Does the car have the original engine..??

Generally red hot catalytic converters are caused by unburned gas dumped into them...Usually Due to an engine Misfire and not burning the fuel completely in one or more of the cylinders...Could be something as simple as a bad plug wire or spark plug itself....If you could give some more details...Might be able to help you norrow down some..

Hi Kenith.

Thank you for responding so fast.

The engine is the original 301(4.9 ltr) engine. I have around 114000 km. the car is a Canadian car. I live in Ontario Canada. I have had the car since new. I will get the spark plugs  and wires looked into before removing the cats.

Thanks Mike

That was the old skool way of testing for a plugged cat.  Get it warm at night and look under the car.  Replace if it glows. Also check flow from exhaust tip with your hand to see if there is a difference.  Did you install??? Can you check to see if flow is in the right direction?
