Under Hood Paint Color
rickmpontiac replied to rickmpontiac's topic in Pontiac Interior Discussion/Questions
Thanks Pat for the additional information. I'm with you on the cleaner look like SPRINT6's example. I always struggle with being true to original which in some cases is not always perfect. -
Pontiac Starter Relay
rickmpontiac replied to rickmpontiac's topic in Pontiac General Discussion/Questions
Thanks Mike and Frosty for the feedback. Your thoughts agree with everything I've been able to find about relays. The car starts very easily cold or hot. I have a fairly detailed history log from the previous owner, including gas fill ups, oil changes, etc. that says it had headers on it at one point and they were replaced with the original exhaust manifolds. Thanks again guys! -
I've been doing a crime scene investigation on my 67 GTO regarding a relay on the firewall. It has three connections: 1) Ignition switch (purple wire), 2) Wire to the ignition switch post on the starter solenoid. 3) Wire to the large post on the starter solenoid (also used for the positive battery cable). I can't find any wiring diagram for the car that includes a relay and no parts sources have anything called a starter or ignition relay for the car so it was added sometime in the past. I understand the purpose of a relay is to open/close a circuit carrying higher amperage. Based on that I assume this relay has transferred the power load that did go through the ignition switch to the relay. Just curious to see if anyone has an idea of why it was added?

Hendrick Motorsports is a cool place to visit if you're ever that way. You can see where the team cars are built/maintained and see a good size collection of their race cars, including the real race car that was reskinned to use in Days of Thunder. They have a cutaway chassis that you can tryout a driver's compartment. I got into it and couldn't believe how cramped everything is for the drivers. -

Under Hood Paint Color
rickmpontiac replied to rickmpontiac's topic in Pontiac Interior Discussion/Questions
Thanks Pat, just ordered a copy of this book. -
Just curious if anyone knows what color paint was used on the underside of the hood for a 67 GTO? Mine is currently the color of the car, but needs to be redone so I want to make sure I refinish it in the factory correct color, either body color or possibly black. Any comments are appreciated.

Trim Rings

Finally decided to just go with the factory looking trim rings. I must say I'm very pleased with the look of these rings as compared to the others that were on the car when I bought it. The new ones are in the second picture. -
Trunk Spatter Paint
rickmpontiac replied to rickmpontiac's topic in Pontiac Interior Discussion/Questions
Finished my trunk restoration. Decided to remove my trunk latch mechanism to clean it up and discovered my lock had issues so had to buy a new set of matching trunk, glove box and console lid locks. That was an unexpected expense, but thanks to Ames Performance no big deal in getting the replacements. The good news is I now have a "GM" trunk key instead of the generic key I received with the car. Left the tail light buckets alone so not to disturb their natural finish. -
Trunk Spatter Paint
rickmpontiac replied to rickmpontiac's topic in Pontiac Interior Discussion/Questions
A wise man once told me that experience is something you have after you really needed it. So everyone but me probably knows this but you can't change the color of your trunk from gray/white spatter to black/aqua spatter without painting it black first. I realized this after spraying four cans of spatter paint. Decided to start over by painting the entire trunk with black and then the the black/aqua spatter. The results are 100% improved over my first attempt and it required much less spatter paint than I thought it would after spraying the first four cans. -

All very good suggestions Frosty, as I am still getting familiar with the overall condition of the car. -
Dash Pad Replacement 67 GTO
rickmpontiac replied to rickmpontiac's topic in Pontiac Interior Discussion/Questions
Thanks Frosty, I just got a copy of the shop manuals for the car this past weekend, but the details were a little vague on the topic. I have read in other sources that removal of the glove box is a must to get to the two fasteners on that side. -
I've been thinking about replacing the dash pad in my 67 gto. The previous owner put one of those cheaper plastic covers in it. Doesn't look too bad, but I think heat has caused the right side to distort some. I have read in some restoration guides that there are 4 or 5 screws above the instrument panel, one just above and left of the glove box and another on the right end just above the glove box. Do any of you have some experience with this that you could share? Thanks in advance.
