How to match JADESTONE green 1961 Pontiac paint?

Featured Replies

Folks, after several tries, including some company in the UK, I cannot source a rattle can aerosol to even come close to the original Jadestone green.

That would be Ditzler paint code "DDL 42837". Take that code to any reputable automotive paint store and they can mix you up a rattle can in maybe 20 minutes. They can give you a sample on a spray out card to take home for comparison and possible adjustment to the color before they actually complete your order. This would be a single stage mix, not a base coat / clear coat recipe. This will NOT be in lacquer which was the original chemistry of GM paint back then.

Around here, that would be maybe $35.00 and their recipe for this blend will be printed on a label adhered to your can for future reference. That paint code will also probably cross reference to a Sherwin Williams code or maybe a Dupont code.

Thanks so much for all that information!

I have added a heater to the option list that this race car did not have.

If this is truly an original 421 SD car with things like radio and heater delete because it was a purpose built factory race car, adding a heater might diminish its value a bit. Numbers matching SD 421 cars are very, very valuable.

Now if someone installed a SD 421 engine into this car after it left the factory, go right ahead.

Getting the PHS documentation will tell you all about your car when it left the factory.

My son cautioned me the same when I replaced the dry rotted tires with COKER bias belt inch walls.

Curiously enough the car has an AM radio tho...

The heater was installed by professional and looks factory, got to have heat if I'm going to drive it in the winter even here in north SC!

I have the factory PHS build sheet, and it was delivered with a 389 with three twos. Upgraded to a 421 at the dealershp.

Comments race fans??

Now I see a bit of a dilemma forming here. Not about the heater so much, simply because it is an original 389 car.

What is more interesting is you stated that a dealer installed the SD 421. If you have that unique paper work to prove that from the dealer, then perhaps this car maybe a dealer sponsored race car, like a Royal Pontiac Bobcat. These dealer cars, while not as valuable as a factory SD car, are still quite valuable unicorns.

A late WV friend of mine owned a rare triple black '63 Tempest. The original buyer wanted a 421 SD but Pontiac refused build one for street use (not to mention GM's ban on factory sponsored racing was also in effect), so the dealer offered to install a 421 HO motor instead. 421s were never offered in the '63 Tempest period. So this car became a one of none car. He had the documentation to prove it too. This is a six figure car all day long as a result.

Therefore if you have a documented dealer-installed SD 421 engine, then your car is still valuable and rare.

Regardless, having a SD 421 in your Cat is bad ass period.

The 389 to 421 upgrade was performed at Wiley Pontiac -Buick Bloomington Illinois.

Replaced the crankshaft and bored out the block a tad, aluminum dual quad manifold installed.

So this is a numbers matching 421 SD, factory Borg-Warner T-10 with Hurst shifter 3:90 Positraction.
