Ring Around the Rotor

Recommended Posts

Need a little help trying to figure out how do u get a ring along the outer the edge the rotor. I can hear the grinding when I turn the wheel sharply but not all the way to the right or left. Has this happened to anyone before?

how old are the pads?

are they the OEM rotors?

Have they ever been cut?

because the brake rotors and pads are wearable items they will lose material, both metal and organic pads. because the pads dont cover the entire rotor the rotor there is going to be a ring of material at the top of the rotor because it is never touched by the pad

if it is a scrape noise then there is a good indication that you are on the sensor. that means that you are in need of brakes.

if there is a gouge in your rotor, lets say in the middle of the rotor, then the sensor is/has been touching for some time. also there could be a piece of debris that is wedged between the rotor and the pad.

hope it helps

Pics would greatly help out.

To me, it sounds like the rotor is out of spec, thickness-wise. Sounds like you have not been resurfacing your rotors in between brake jobs. Pad slaps are very unwise to do.
