Car and Driver: Get Forty: Hyundai Rolls Out 40-mpg Elantra Eco

We’ve already seen the regular—SE and Limited—versions of the redesigned 2017 Hyundai Elantra, as well as the new Sport model, and now Hyundai is bringing out the fuel-economy champ, the Elantra Eco. For the most-economical Elantra, one will pay more than for the very cheapest version, but less than the sticker on most the other versions.


While the SE and Limited have a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine rated at 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque—and the Sport gets a 1.6-liter turbocharged four—the Eco’s exclusive engine is 1.4-liter direct-injected turbo four, good for 128 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. As in the Sport, the only transmission for the Eco is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The combo delivers EPA ratings of 32 mpg city, 40 mph highway—making it the only Elantra to hit the 40-mpg mark. (The next-most-economical version is the SE with its optional six-speed automatic, which is rated at 29/38.)


The Eco stickers for $21,485, which puts it between the SE (which is $17,985 for the manual, $18,985 with the automatic) and the Limited (which starts at $23,185). Besides the 1.4-liter turbo and seven-speed automatic, the Eco’s standard equipment list includes heated seats, keyless entry and pushbutton ignition, LED daytime running lights, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic detection, among items. That makes the Eco similarly equipped to the SE with the Popular Equipment Package and the Tech Package. An SE with those options lists at $21,085—which means a $400 premium for the Eco, or $400 to get 40.
