Since CES has become a bona fide car show, Kia used the occasion to announce the creation of what it’s calling a new sub-brand for its autonomous driving technologies called “Drive Wise.” This follows Kia’s recent announcement to bring partially autonomous vehicles to market by 2020, and its first fully autonomous car by 2030.

Drive Wise technologies on display at CES are Kia’s new Highway Autonomous Driving with lane-changing and overtaking capabilities and Urban Autonomous Driving that responds to traffic updates. Kia is also showing a Preceding Vehicle Following system that sounds similar to Volvo’s Auto Pilot system; an Emergency Stop System that monitors the driver’s face, pulling over to the side if the driver takes his or her eyes from the road for too long; Traffic Jam Assist, which Kia say maintains a safe distance and moves into appropriate spaces to gain ground; and Autonomous Valet Parking.

Also at CES this year is Kia’s I-Cockpit display, which previews the company’s next-generation human-interface technologies, including gesture control and a fingerprint touchpad that automatically recognizes driver preferences such as radio and climate settings based on his or her fingerprint.

Kia did not specify which of the above technologies would be first to make it into Kia production models, nor did it say which Kias would be the first to get them (the feature vehicle is a Kia Soul EV). Also unclear is whether it plans to have all of the features or just some of them on Kia vehicles by 2020. Regardless, Kia will add “vehicle-to-everything” (V2X) technologies to its Drive Wise tech suite during the following decade as it prepares to introduce its first fully self-driving car by 2030.
