Car and Driver: After Delay, Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon Diesels Are Being Released to Dealers

These are tense times for automakers selling diesels in the United States. In the wake of Volkswagen’s emissions cheating, the EPA announced that it would be more stringent in its testing. All this happened just as GM was supposed to bring its first-ever mid-size diesel pickup to market in the fall. And sure enough, the trucks were delayed. Now, however, the Detroit News is reporting, and GM has confirmed, that the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon diesels are being released to dealers.

General Motors, which claimed in November that the trucks achieved their EPA certification, has not given a reason for the delay. The trucks are powered by a 2.8-liter Duramax turbocharged four-cylinder diesel. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic and comes as a Crew Cab only. EPA ratings are 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway (two-wheel drive) and 20/29 mpg (four-wheel drive).

The 181-hp diesel churns out 369 lb-ft of torque, which is the best of any Colorado/Canyon engine. Its 7700-pound towing capacity is also tops among its siblings. In our first-drive review of the diesel, we found it to be refined and punchy. Now customers who’ve ordered one finally will be able to see that for themselves.
