Car and Driver: Fiat-Chrysler Recalls 412,000 Jeep and Dodge SUVs for Fires, Steering Fluid Leaks

Fiat-Chrysler is recalling 412,938 Jeep and Dodge SUVs to fix potential electrical fires and power steering failures, the automaker said over the Christmas holiday.

Owners of 2011-2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango models received recall notices in July 2014 that their headliners could catch fire from an electrical short in the wiring harness for the vanity-mirror light. At that time, 895,000 of the SUVs from 2011-2014 were under recall. This time, FCA is calling back 352,831 of those same vehicles because dealers could have threaded the wires incorrectly during the initial repair, which can still lead to a short circuit and a fire. Chrysler said 180 vehicles came back to dealers with “overheating conditions” after the repairs. The updated fix instructs dealers to tape over sharp edges of the bare sheetmetal, and only applies to vehicles with longer vanity-mirror-light wires (vehicles built after September 1, 2012 have a shorter wire less susceptible to damage).

Another 60,107 Jeep Compass and Patriot models from 2015 have steering hose clamps that may be positioned incorrectly and can lead to a “rapid loss” of fluid, and thus, the steering assist itself. If power steering fluid leaks onto something hot, a fire could start under the hood. A fix and a repair schedule was not provided. Filings were not yet posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
