Why does the 301 starter sit on driver side of block? And what transmissions will bolt to this

The 301 was originally bolted to a THM350 non-lockup transmission (sometimes called the CBC350 transmission) or the THM350C (lock-up converter) transmissions in the '81 Trans Ams. However, it retained the stock Pontiac transmission bolt pattern, so theoretically it can bolt to any BOP bolt-pattern transmission. Performance wise, however, the 301 (even the turbo variant) does not generate enough power to warrant anything above the THM350.

All PontiacV8 engines have the starter on the driver side. Chevy engines have the starter on the passenger side.
