Need some help with electrical gremlins

Featured Replies

I recently bought a 1994 firebird that wasn’t running to fix up and restore. I got it running by replacing the pig tail to the fuel pump relay and she fired tight up. Now i have a serious headache ahead dealing with the electrical issues. There are a few major ones, the first is that the  security light is on but doesn’t stop the car from turning on. The second is that the radio headlights and fans and very strange. Key on headlights off the radio will cycle on and off with a bump from the speakers when it turns on and off. In this configuration the ac fan works fine. With the lights on the radio shuts off completely with the fans only working on the lower speeds and stopping completely if i put them on high. Occasionally the oil light goes on and stay on for the key cycle but i have good pressure and level. Finally sometimes if i turn on the headlights the airbag light will go out(its usually on) but this doesn’t always happen, occasionally the airbag light stays on with the headlights on. If anyone has any ideas on what could be going on let me know!

welcome to fp Jorge :welcomeFP:

i am not up to speed with your firebird, but from what you have said, my fist thought is to get the car on a scan tool, your  car will be either obd1 or obd2 .

have a good look through any existing fault codes and thats a great starting point.

With that many things wrong, I would suspect a grounding problem, maybe several.

yes very good point Rick ! corosion is a big factor and things can look ok but are so not when you undo the main earths and see all the oxidation under the terminals ... holdens are great for that !!

I have seen corrosion in the fuse block itself and in some of the old glass fuses too.
