We had a visitor from nearby Willow Run Airport......Willow Run was where Ford built a massive assembly complex at the back end of Willow Run airport during WWII to build B-24 Liberators (twin tail bombers). One of the last remaining buildings from that complex is home to the Yankee Air Force.

From the Yankee Air Force, this is a restored B-17F called the "Yankee Lady". It did NOT see action overseas. It was built near the end of the war. After the war, it was converted to fire fighting. The Yankee Air Force had to do a complete nut and bolt restoration on this plane. I remember my dad and I seeing this plane just before it got it's airworthiness certification from the FAA. They were installing the belly ball turret. They had a hard time getting one. What few are left, no one wants to sell. This one came from Hollywood. This is the ball turret that was used in the movie "Memphis Belle".

According to Google, there are approximately 45 B-17s in the world that are in complete form. Only 10 or less are in flying condition. This was a rare treat indeed. I apologize in advance for some of the quality of the photos. The photos were taken from quite a distance in some cases, and then I had to digitally enlarged the photo to get a close up on the Yankee Lady.

Enjoy.....I did.

One of the coolest things about the Yankee Air Museum is that you can pay to take a joy ride in one of their birds. It's not exactly cheap but it would be a very cool once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Not very often you see a 80-81 turbo Trans Am still with the original turbo 301 in it. As pretty as this car was, this guy had engine trouble most of the day. He and two other buddies were working on the carb for the longest time. Interesting color too, not a color I am familiar with.

I went inside the main building to use the restroom. I found the Ramchargers presentation had started. There were a collection of the Ramchargers old cars along with the living members of the original Ramchargers drag team. The Ramchargers were Chrysler engineers who wanted to go drag racing in the early 60s. Mopar had no form race teams. They spent their own time and money to build cars and go fast. Their success eventually lead to Mopar performance parts and teams being developed.

This is High and Mighty II. An exact re-creation of the original Ramchargers car, the High and Mighty, a '59 Plymouth. The original car was involved in an accident in the 60s and destroyed. This car is a replacement car with many parts salvaged from the original High and Mighty.

Here is "The Silver Bullet", a literal race car that Chrysler put on the street. This is one of the Kings of Woodward. It is rumored to have never lost a street race.

After the car show, I headed down Woodward, in search of my annual sign souvenir. I made it to 12 Mile, at the Shrine of the Little Flower Catholic Church parking lot, and then bailed out due to dense traffic on northbound Woodward.

This is the building just outside the M1 Concourse - Gate 4. GM created GMC from Rapid and Reliance trucks. This is the only remaining Rapid building left. The rest were on the site of the M1 Concourse. GM torn down those buildings to build the GM facilities that once stood here. M1 torn down the GM complex to build it's facilities.

Now on Woodward
