  1. OOPPS one more question ...when turning it the 180 it more important to move the whole distributor and keep rotor pointed to #1 or to also move rotor into the 180..I just dropped back down and turned the whole thing 180 but kept the rotor at #1 or am I just chasing my tail by doing that. And I can maybe another problem as the vacuum advance is now to the passenger side it really close to a raditor hose which might be problem when timing.Thats Why I was thinking only the rotor and shaft are at 180 They say if it's out 180 will do the same and that is what it has done a slight backfire to nothing but maybe fuel spitting out the carb..But that diagram is the only they show on the net for all Pontiac's
  2. Yes took a copy of the firing order diagram 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 and when I wired it started on the drivers side one wire at a time and followed the diagram .
  3. Hi..I used a whislte and when it at the highest pitch looked and my timing mark was between 0 and 2 rotor pointing at # 1 .Now I am wondering since I bought those spark plug wires you make yourself if maybe a couple aren't so good and won't fire or make it back fire.It did back fire a little but then again I seen fuel shoot though the carb which i was told is a sign it's off 180.
  4. I checked everything am at TDC and timing tab is at 0 and tried to fire it up and getting backfire though the exhaust could I be 180 off and need to point the mjy rotor towards number 8 and not 1??
  5. Thanks I thought it was different because all I found was everything but for the 428.Then found out they are all the same even the Chevy's.Found my TDC and hope this will work if not told I am most likely 180 off ...ahh the joys of the classic's
  6. Hi guys looking for a diagram for my 69 Bonneville 428 firing order.I put in a new hei and thought I had the right diagram but maybe not and seem the only ones I can find on line are for everything but the 428.I can't seem to get to kick over so hoping that is the problem or may have to try to get tdc again.Which is another question .I used the tabs and rotated until my mark is at 0.Will that change now that I went to HEI and should use the number one and not worry about what it says on the tab... Thanks Terry
  7. Ok great do you happen to know where I can get the dash lights to be able to change it over..
  8. Where would I need to wire them into if I use pig tails?
  9. Hi guys getting to swap out my points for a new HEI and and going to make up the my wires but wondering now that I am do I need to change the gap in my plugs..I hear yes and no..have a 428 bonneville
  10. Hi...no it didn't lag just wouldn't start I pretty sure it was in my coil wire .When I wiggled that it started so what I did was widen the end of the wire so it was tighter as I pushed it down into the coil itself and see if that helps..Will yours try to start and act like it won't start like being staved for gas?? Could be an easy fix as in a clogged fuel filter. One test to check your fuel pump is to turn the the key on without starting and listen to it.You should hear it as long it's quiet or even get a friend to listen in back by the gas tank.If you hear nothing bad pump if you do then either a bad filter or alittle bit of a clogged gas line.
  11. Hi guys..Actually first time out this year for anything more then quick runs.As I was running seemed to be very good pulled into a car show and as soon as I did the car died.Able to start it up to get out it out of the way then died again. My first thought was ohh geezz must be the fuel pump or the q-jet went bad.I don't know how old they are but look original. After about 20 min a guy stopped by to help and we were looking and fiddled with the coil wire and poof it fired right up.Thought I should head for home but after about 5 miles it did it again wiggeled it again and started then after about 5 miles and yess again so jamed down pretty good and got home.Checked everything points are dwell is 31 running 12 btdc rpms around 1000 but turned them up when out so took it down 900.I did put on new coil and wires and wondering if the boot was to tight that vibrated itself loose enough to pull the wire and kill it..or even if it a bad coil and got hot and just took a crap..any thoughts??
  12. Well replaced all the sockets with new and didn't do what I hope then remembered something I seen on u tube and taped a spot near the turn signal and poor it worked will have go back and see if any other spots can be taped if not looks like the all day work thanks for information on getting to it.was afraid that would what I would have to do.
  13. Hi Frosty had the same idea and put a fuse there not sure but will have to check again what it said think it is assy.Just got all new bulbs and along with all new sockets also and if that doesn't work will have to end up putting in a new circuit board but hope that's not it since my high beam light works and the turn singnals also.Did take two sockets out over the weekend and they are pretty beat up.My thinking everything is almost 50yrs old and they never bothered to check or replace anything. But little by little everything will be new again the fun or restoring..Are the dash's hard to take out?My brother was taking to his car guy and he told not to use LED's he said they draw alot from the classic wires
  14. Am fighting this problem have ordered new twist plugs figuring everything is almost 50yrs old on it.but did check the fuse box and all the fuses work but noticed the top one has a plug in it and not a fuse anyone know why and would it hurt to put a fuse in to see what might happen
  15. Hi everyone just wondering if anyone had problems with their dash lights and had to replace the circuit board? Have a 69 bonneville and found i have no dash lights.Though simple problem and just replace the bulbs. But found it doesn't have the pig tail type but the twist in with the circuit board.Checked fuses and good went and replaced the bulbs .I do have turn signals and even my high beam light works but no dash.I even replaced the headlight switch and still nothing.Gonna try one more thing and use clips to ground out the dash and see if that's it.If not then it's a bad board and wondering how much trouble it is
  16. Went and looked this morning and found two pig tails hanging with no bulbs so now I know about the clock and gas gauge.Traced the wire hanging and why they used a with and not a speaker wire for the radio I have no idea. The car guy left a couple of wires and a plug and found they went to the radio and as far as I know it doesn't work but going to plug it into the fuse box and see if any power but do have a new one.But know that I went though the OPI I seen that they come with a dashboard circuit board and wondering if that could be the problem not so much around the turn signals but more in the center for the dash lights? And wondering how do you check it or even install a new one?
  17. Hi yes the turn signals work but just the dash lights don't not sure why but who ever had it before me didn't have any lights at all in gas gauge or clock it feels like they take pig tails and found two wires hanging I did order new connectors today hoping the old ones are corroded .Pretty sure will take it to a wire guy to find out what is what if this doesn't work
  18. Hi...yes that is the type I have after looking at it more.Thought maybe a fuse but the car guy told me when checked them said they were all good.My turn signal's do work went and bought new bulbs and try it..Wondering if that is the type if one bulb is bad will others not work? And if still not working will change out the relay.I am thinking the car has sat for so long and who ever had just let things go..
  19. Hi again back with more questions.I finally able to run the car last and ran great but I had no dash lights blinkers worked and all not but nothing on the dash so figured easy fix stopped and picked up some bulbs but the problem a way different type then what I thought.I thought it would a plug out put new bulb in and nothing to it but seem there is no socket but a sold light.Doesn't plug into anything so am wondering how it complete the circuit? does it run against that small plate that is on back of dash? Just wondering since I never seen one that had to wires to it.Thanks
  20. Always ready for a good T-shirt
  21. Great know right where's it is at Thanks..now for another question I hope you can help with being new to the bonnevilles.I have either a bad tail light or socket and not sure what it does.It is the light next to back up lights didn't seem to work and wanted to change out the socket and noticed there is only one filament on the old socket is that common ?Was wondering if that is the break light light also as I also noticed the same thing on the other side also one filament there also thought the bulbs had to hit two to make a connection plus only one wire in all the sockets the new socket has a white and black wire..Was a cheap socket I got at autozone and doesn't work so ordered a ome on e-bay thanks....
  22. Hi didn't know anyone was that close I actually live in wickliffe. They aren't bad just beat up and from what I was told the heat and sun did a job on them the dash needs re done also.
  23. Hi am wondering if anyone might know where I can get the inside door panels for a 69 Bonneville.Have been looking all over. When I bought it in April didn't think they would be hard to find mine are pretty beat up and looking even for something I get re done
  24. Not yet will next month they replaced steering box.ball joints tie rib ends waiting for the rain to stop to see how she rides.they couldn't do the muffled so will take it and have them fabbbed in.talked to people at original parts and was told it easier to sell parts for the got le mans then it is for the Bonneville and the only ones compatible are the grand prix and Catalina Bonneville is different did find a gas tank that would fit a 70 buick wagon
  25. Hi Frosty think your right parts are there.I rebuilt a 57 chevy and parts are out there for anything will just have to take time.Pretty sure the shop I took it to is more or less changing sensor's brake jobs stuff like nothing old school type car guys.I told him last nite if he can't find anything to just replace the pipe from back of muffler pretty straight piece and would look around later They had it for almost 6weeks now and really haven't done anything.Oh well live a learn..
