Agreed bro.  Best solution is a used 4X4.  NOT something you do to your Daily driver, But I like his idea of mildly moddin the AWD as a project. It can be done fairly easily even without going with a body lift. Depends on his skills. Did you read throught the tread and check out some of the thoughts on the project?
