Power Windows not working

Featured Replies

Hi, so I got power windows in my 77 firebird and for the last few weeks the windows would sometimes works, sometimes not, and today they just stopped working completely. Both windows don't go down, so could it be the switch? I did check that the wires in the fuse box are connected so if anyone has any advice for what to check next I would very much appreciate it! 💙

Thanks, Audrianna

Hi Audrianna.

A couple of quick thoughts here. Is the passenger window dead or does it work if you try the passenger side window switch?

1. The drivers switch could be bad since you can roll both windows up and down with it.

2. Check for a blown or damaged fuse. Check your owner's manual - there should be a diagram of the fuse block. Check the fuse that is for the power windows/power accessories. Make sure it is not blown or corroded. The diagram might look like this.....

3. It is possible that there is a relay for the power windows that has failed. I have one on my '72 convertible. It manages both the power windows and convertible top. That relay (on my car) is located behind the driver's side footwell panel. If there is one on your car, that is where I would expect it to be.

The passenger window doesn't go down either. This is what the fuse box looks like, a little hard to read. I don't see a fuse that says anything about windows but could it be a fuse under Power and Accsy? (Located left of the 3 wires plugged in)

The power windows should run through the Power Accessory fuse. It should be a 20A or 30A fuse. In the picture below, it is the fust that is missing at the upper left corner. There should be a wire with a plug that is plugged into the ACC blade in the middle of the fuse block. This should supply power to the window switches.
